have you tried edressme.com, or go to bloomingdales, they always have great formal dresses. Also, I think cocktail length is definitely acceptable, people are wearing cocktail length to black tie nowadays... I almost always wear cocktail length because I also think most long dresses make me look like I am a BM or going to prom. Good luck!
