Re: MIL problem--need advice. :'(

I am really sorry you are going through all this, considering this should be such a great time in your life. We have many problems with my FMIL and we have learned to try and not let it get in the way of us. Maybe try talking to her together? If it upsets you both, then it seems too important to let it go. She had no right to say things like that. In my experience , if you dont confront her , she will probably keep going. Or maybe she did not realize what she said. But it might be easier to talk all 3 of you. You will be part of her family! Good luck. If you need to talk we are here!!

IF there is one thing I have learned lol
it matters what you and your fh want
if you want say something if not than dont, most MIL's like
I should say LOVE to make something out of nothing!!!

always looking to make trouble, basically, you know its interfaith so who cares what she says to people, I know it bothers you but dont let it ruin your joy :)

It sounds like your FMIL is still coming to terms with this. I think that if it was a friend she was talking to she may have chosen her words more wisely. The fact that she was speaking to a priest probably had something to do with her saying it was a 'Catholic' ceremony.

You should absolutely speak to her. I think your FH should be with you to show support, but, you need to let her know how much she hurt you. She needs to respect the fact that you're a different faith than her son and he loves you regardless.

Has she made any comments about the ceremony itself?

For the record, I'm Catholic and DH is Jewish. We also had an interfaith ceremony w/ a RC Priest and a Rabbi. We incorporated many traditions from both faiths such as having a Chuppah, Kiddush Cup, Readings, Seven Blessings, Unity Candle, Ave Maria, Breaking the Glass, Programs and Kippot! It was beautiful. I'm sure yours will be, too!!

Whew, this got long!

Good luck!

I have a similar reaction to Kathi. My guess is that she her discomfort was magnified by the presence of her priest, and wanting to look proper in front of him. Sounds to me like she is a bit insecure. I'm sure this is very hard on you.... *HUGS* Remember, its what your FI thinks that really matters, the rest of his family would just be icing on the cake.

Hey girl! I feel for you, I really do and I know what you are going through. My FH's parents are very religious and Lutheren NOW. (More on that in a minute.) My parents are Muslim and non-practicing. FH and I are both agnostic - but came to that decision with a great deal of thought and research. FH and I are having almost a 3-year engagement (spread out the pain!). FH had a discussion with his parents regarding our religious beliefs and desire to have a non-denominational, fairly non-religious wedding ceremony. (We considered doing an interfaith thing, but decided that would be too hypocritical. We both love our parents - and each other's - very much and don't want to hurt them or disappoint them either.)

Last year, 3 days before our appointment with the Harbor Club to put down our deposit, his dad says that they are very unhappy that we are not getting married in a church. At this point I completely freak out, have a break down, sort of go through what you are going through now. I mean, do they even understand that I am not a Christian??? FH talks to his parents and they 'remember' that they are ok with the non-church wedding. Whew!

At Christmas this year they tricked me into going to church with them. I wouldn't have minded going if they had asked, but the trickery involved just made me mad. And they really want my parents to go to church with them (the parents don't get along real well and this is part of why).

This summer we mentioned that we were thinking of having my brother become ordained via ULC and perform a wedding ceremony that we design. FMIL says, 'We'll see.' If that wasn't enough to set my blood boiling, a few days later she just casually states during a phone conversation, 'Dad and I want you to go talk to a minister.' Again, total freak out and melt down. I felt much like you are feeling today. Made myself completely sick. Cried and felt nauseaus and couldn't sleep for days.

I didn't really mean to make this about me, but to say that you are not alone. I don't know if it helped. I don't really know what advise to give. I had FH talk to his parents again about religious sensitivity. The most ironic thing about all of this is that his mom was raised Jewish, converted to Catholism for his dad, raised the kids Catholic, then his parents converted to Lutherenism. It's not like they aren't aware of other religions!

Do what you are comfortable with regarding FILs. Try to ignore them as much as possible. Have FH talk to his parents about watching what they say around your family. And remember in the end, it's a ceremony that you and your FH put a lot of thought into and are happy with. As long as the two of you are in agreement, things will be ok. Promise!
