Im not one, but i did get certified by BOCES to be one.. They dont pay very well and it was hard to find a job with no experience. They wanted me to start as a receptionist first. Your better off going for the Veterinary Tech which is a 2 yr program at suffolk college (nassau might have a program too).

Re: NWR : Vet's Assistant
Do you have animal care experience and live in suffolk county? If so there are animal control officer jobs open right now.. You need 1 yr of experience in the care and handling of animals (paid or volunteer) and a high school degree.

Re: NWR : Vet's Assistant
I am an RVT and went through a 2 year program. More and more places are starting to differentiate between Vet Assistants and Vet Techs. As far as jobs, depending on what you are interested in doing, there is money to be made. I personally do not work in a small animal clinic and I make pretty good money and have great benefits.
Feel free to FM me if you want more info.

Re: NWR : Vet's Assistant
My husband completed the program at SUNY at Farmingdale. He took the NY test and is now a Licensed Vet Technician.
