We life in Fl but we are having our wedding in NY. Do you think that it's wrong that I only want Money or gift cards for a wedding gift. My reason for that is that it would be to hard to travel with over a hundred presents. We would have to ship them to our house and that would be another thing that we would have to worry about.....It's not that I don't like gifts , it's just that I think that money or gift cards would make our lives much simpler. What do you think?

Most people know they are 'supposed' to give money at the wedding. You will rarely see anyone carrying around a gift in a box. But, I would be offended if I received an invite and it said money or gift cards only. I wouldnt say anything at all because people already know to do this.

Yea i prob would be offended too but if I knew that they didn't live in that state I wouldn't be mad. Many of my guest I know for a fact would want to give a gift in stead of money..

I have never been to a wedding on LI where people gave something other than a card. I think you'll be fine. If people do get you gifts, you could always return them to get a credit and then maybe rebuy them. I know it would be a pain, but at least you wouldn't have to worry about flying with or shipping boxes.

I did receive something like this and I was offended. Especially since I would have given a check anyway. I thought it was rude that I was being told in a roundabout way that I should give money. So I think I would leave anything about gifts off the invite. JMO. But you're not wrong for not wanting actually gifts - I think you'll receive cards with either checks, cash, or gift cards. I think that's the norm these days.

I think that it is tacky also. It was suggested to me by someone because they know who my guest are. I don't want to get into detail but they had a reason to suggest it... I wont put it in my invites but I know I wish that I had...lol...but yes I don't like that idea either.

plus you could just o a registry at a store that is local to you or a chain and they often just ship stuff to you. .. that way if there was stuff you wanted you could get in and not have to travel with. but ITA that most people will prob give $ esp since they know you are out of town.

Re: Am I wrong
Most people bring cards with money in them, it's kind of rare to see someone bring a gift. That being said, I too would be offended if someone only requested money as a gift from me. I mean what if I couldn't afford to give money, I would hope that my gift would be appreciated enough; it isn't like showing up empty handed. For the number of gifts you do get, sending them/carrying them home probably won't be an issue... but I would NOT ask for just money/gift cards.

I made fun of someone I knew for months for her invite clause...'no boxed gifts please...'
WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?
I mean I get your reason, hers was that she just wanted cash.

i get your reasoning...ESPECIALLY since out of state weddings are very different then NY weddings...however i wouldn't put anything on ur invites.. I would have ur mom spread it around by word of mouth, or tell a few good friends who u know'll understand - news spreads quick!

Re: Am I wrong
Like some girls said above, at weddings you rarely get a boxed gift anyway, so there's no point in bringing it up. However, I was in the same sort of situation with my Bridal Shower. Since we're driving back to Colorado after the wedding, it would be a huge hassle to try and pack all MY stuff in the car as well as the Gifts. But I still didn't tell anybody to give no boxed gifts. Just seemed rude, and I figured that most people knew our situation anyway. Luckily people considered this and did not give me anything too large, so it really should be no problem packing the car. I did, however, take a couple things and return them for a gift card. That way I could ORDER something that I really want or need and just have it immediately shipped to Co. That seemed to work out good.
So, like i said, definitely sounds rude to say anything in an invite. But if people give you anything too large that you can't travel with (or don't need), you might want to consider returning it for a giftcard (unless it's something you really want of course) Just a suggestion if you feel like your hands are tied.

Re: Am I wrong
You aren't wrong to want that but you would be wrong to request it. Registries allow shipping to your house, if you wont be home during a period contact the store you are registered and ask if they can 'hold' all gifts while you are not at home.
I am not sure how you could get all money gifts without asking and if you ask some might be offended . HTH

I think in NY it is rare that anyone gets box gift. Most people give money so I wouln't worry about it. I wouldn't tell people though because you would offend them.
What you can do though is let it be known that if someone is going to give you a boxed gift if they can send it to you in fl because it will be difficult for you to take.

Re: Am I wrong
A gift is a gift. You have to accept whatever people give you. If you're getting married in NY I have to assume you have family here. You can store any gifts with them until you can bring them back to FL or return them for credit up here in NY.
Most people in NY bring monetary gifts to weddings, so you're probably ok. But you CANNOT ask for money. That's extremely tacky.
