I did not call anyone any names; that's not my style at all. And, this forum is for expressing opinions on things and giving/getting help. That's what I did. Some things are simply not worth getting upset over.

If we looked at our guest list, maily referring to his family- and asked, do we think they're going to give the 'per plate' gift, none of his family (parents excluded) would be invited It's nice when people do the right thing, as in give a gift. I'm not going to comment if I think the 'per plate' is the right thing or not. A nice gift for a wedding, yes, I think is always appropiate. If you can not afford it, don't go!

I have to disagree as well...one of my dads cousins and wife are not financially too secure...they told my aunt that they worried about coming to the wedding, b/c they couldn't afford a nice gift...thankfully my aunt said...a gift isn't necessary...they just want you to come..
and I was so happy they did...for my shower, she knit me a blanket (inexpenisve...but time consuming and very thoughtful) and for the wedding they gave $75...they could have given me a lottery ticket and it would have been fine...
I think the idea of the previous comment was that if people can't give you a gift and you don't care...they should be at your wedding...if you don't feel that way about them...then maybe you should reevaluate why you are inviting them

I totally agree with Michelle that you should expect nothing from your guests. That being said, I am learning that it is difficult to deal with this issue.
I have a lot of family that is not very well off. Their shower gifts were fairly small checks. I have to admit it did make me cringe just a little when I realized that their wedding gifts would probably be in line and, thus, about one-fifth of the cost of their plate, but I really just want them to come, so I don't care too much. But, still, I thought about it.
I don't think it necessarily makes them cheap. You really never know about another persons finances.
