idk it doesn't sound too good asking money from FMIL when her son barely speaks to her, but I wouldn't worry too much about it, whats the worst that can happen, she'll say no? So you might as well put it out there.

I can understand why you asked her, my parents are giving us about $10k ( but they want it to be a surprise) for the wedding and my MIL is not contributing anything because she can't afford it and I completely understand that. I personally wouldn't ask her for any money because I would not want to ever make her feel bad. I don't know what type of person you MIL is but I personally wouldn't have sent the email, and if I felt that it was necessary to send, I would have probably asked fh first. I don't think its the amount that your MIL contributed that matters, maybe the shower was the only thing she was able to afford, and another $500 would really put her over the top? Is there another way that you and fh could save up for the HM? Maybe tell MIL that the two of you are tight on money and if she could keep the number of guests she invited to a limited number?

No, don't feel bad for sending it. Next time you talk to fmil, explain why you sent it, and tell her that it was not meant to make her feel obligated.

I know the frustration though...my parents cant give a dime but FHs parents have plenty of money and they see us struggling with the wedding but have never offered a dime
I have been tempted many a time to contact FMIL and ask if and what she was giving, just never went through with it
The email doesn't sound bad, it seems genuine. I can't imagine her getting upset over it, but then again I don't know FMIL. Listen, youll never know if you don't ask! I don't think there was any harm done
