How long after you get engaged can you have an engagement party?
I seem to be reading all these plans for engagement parties at restaurants or halls with huge guest lists and favors for everyone which I feel inevitably will end up costing thousands of dollars...
I'd totally be cool with and would really just prefer having like a BBQ or something .-- just an excuse to get people together, have some cake and drinks, etc.
I'm not a native Long Islander and I know things are a little different here on the expectation level compared to in the midwest but am I totally way off base?
Will people find just a low-key bbq or get together as being cheap/lame?

Re: xposted -- how formal should your e-party be?
i've heard of/seen pix of many couples that have had a backyard bbq for their e-party and they all look great! i think its a great idea and would be lots of fun!
ETA: As far as how long you can wait after getting engaged, I don't know if it really matters. We had it 5 months after getting engaged, so it doesn't have to be right away.

We had a tent party in my backyard. There are a few pictures of it in my album. I think it turned out nice. It was catered, and everyone had a great time.

we actually wanted a backyard party but had no free weeknds over the summer so that it is why we ended up at at hall. I don't think people will think you are cheap or lame at all. it is your e-party you do what makes you happy!

Not at all..it can be as informal or formal as you want. I totally like the casual barbeque type party. Also, for favors you can do something as simple as cookies or chocolate. I did chocolate.

I agree with the other girls. As informal or formal as you want! We just had at my parents house some close family and friends over and had it catered from a local italian restaurant..and kinda set up a buffet for everyone. It was very low key...but really nice...just another chance for the family to get together and see each other.

you can have it as formal or informal as you want... i dont see anything wrong with a nice backyard bbq... we just had a nice dinner in a restaurant for only the immediate family and close friends... it's hard, especially if you have a large family so thats why we just limited it to the immediate fam... otherwise, you end up inviting everyone and it turns into a mini-wedding!

we had a bbq/backyard party. it was actually one step away from a keg party basically. we are so low key/low maintenance that we wouldn't have had it any other way.
however after totalling everything up pricewise, it probably would've ran the same to have it at a restaurant

I really think it can be as formal or as informal as you want it to be. And as far as how long after getting engaged... I don't think it really matters. Ours was 4 months after. But as long as you aren't having it like, the night before the wedding or something, I don't think it matters when.

We did a BBQ and I'm so glad we did because it was so much fun. We did a Yankee themed party...everyone wore their jerseys and baseball shirts. We were also able to invite just over 100 people and keep the cost under 2k. I dont think we couldve managed that in a resturant. Also- we could keep the party going as long as wanted. And people were there for almost 10 hours. At a hall or resturant, its over in about 4.
Also, you asked about how long after your engagement you can have the party. We had our party over a year later!
