Yankees obtain Nelson for Benitez

The New York Yankees announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jeff Nelson from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Armando Benitez and cash considerations.
Nelson, 36, was 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA and seven saves in 46 games this season (37.2IP, 34H, 14ER, 14BB, 47K) and has held right-handed batters to a .226 average (19-for-84). Since July 5th he has not allowed an earned run in 12 appearances (9.1IP, 6H, 1BB, 16K).

Nelson, named to the 2001 American-League All-Star Team, played five seasons with the Yankees (1996-2000) and was a member of four World Championship teams. His career postseason record is 2-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 47 relief appearances (47.1IP, 45H, 14ER, 21BB, 54K). He was originally obtained by the Yankees from Seattle with 1b Tino Martinez and RHP Jim Mecir in exchange for LHP Sterling Hitchcock and 3b Russ Davis on December 7, 1995. Nelson was signed as a free-agent by the Mariners on December 4, 2000.

Benitez, 30, was 4-4 with a 2.91 ERA and 21 saves in 54 games with the New York Mets and Yankees this season. He was acquired on July 16th from the Mets in exchange for RHPs Jason Anderson, Anderson Garcia and Ryan Bicondoa. In nine games with the Yankees, Benitez was 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA (9.1IP, 8H, 2ER, 6BB, 10K).

I thought Nelson left on not-so-good terms with the Yankees a couple of years ago. I think he wanted a lot of money but the Yankees were not willing to give him that so he left in a huff. Does this sound familiar? I guess I'm a bit surprised that Nelson is coming back. But then again, I think he just burned his bridges with Seattle when he criticized management about not making any major trades before the trading deadline. I wasn't a fan of Benitez and I figured the Yankees were going to use him for bait.

I'm surprised Nelson would agree to come back. He was mighty po-ed when he left.

Re: Yankee News

Nelson left because he had a big mouth and spoke poorly about Joe Torre. He had complained that Joe didn't take him to the All-Star team. Also, when his contract was up he wanted a lot of money and the Yankees didn't want to sign his bigh mouth again.

However, prior to that incident he had an incredible relationship with Joe and the rest of the team. I guess they figure they haven't won since he left so maybe they should put up with his big mouth.

I'm happy that he's back. He's a great pitcher and he has a passion for the game. That's something the bullpen can use.
