Yay, I figured out how to increase calories burnt on Elyptical Trainer Machine!!!
I used to use one of the preset setting to exercise, either the weight loss one or the one where it gets tough and easy every two minutes (similar to weight loss). And in about 30 minutes I normally would burn 150 or so calories (I am lightweight, that's part of the reason)...
But yesterday I tried to set the machine myself, having only small incline with light resistance, with all muscle groups working, and going faster, and I burned 250 calories, which is like a huge plus for meee. And I am not sore today!!!

FH and FSIL (both with degrees in Exercise and Sport Science) say that you cant trust the # of calories that those machines say were spent. Not that you arent burning any calories, we all know how tough that machine is, just dont take it as gospel.

Imagin916 - while the number of calories may not be exact, do you think that if on one day the total number of calories is higher than another day that it is fair to assume the actual number is higher as well?

Yes - they are not accurate, but they are 'proportionally accurate' - when you increase the intensity and the calories burned goes up, it is an increase for you, but it may not be your exact calories burned.
Your exact could even be higher than what the machine says. Just use it as a rough guideline.

I am confused: Is this specific machine correct or no? The machine is Precor EFX 546...

I just started doing this machine a few days ago. It looked really scary at first, but I LOVE it!

Does anyone have any rough indication of the relative benefits of the different cardio machines?

Valenia, what do you mean? Like which one is good for what or which one burns more calories?
Between the treadmill and the elliptical, per the same amount of exersion of my body, I burn more on elliptical, b/c I can't run, and only walk around 4mi/hr on the treadmill. But the elliptical doesn't make you straighten your leggs, so you need to stretch more after the exercise.

There was something on the news about these machines about a year or 2 ago when they were starting to become popular. You will not believe what some people do. This is the best way I can explain this is for example: In WW, carrots used to be 0 points, but people would eat 5 bags of baby carrots a day, and say 'well thier 0 points so why did I gain weight?' In comparison to the machines, there must have been people that burned 500 calories according to the machine and ate that amount of calories and wonder why they didnt burn it off like they said it did. Working out harder to burn calories is one thing, manipulating a machine to make it say that more calories are burned is another. People do crazy things, and nowadays anything you use or buy has a disclaimer on it. It may be fairly accurate, but nothing is perfectly 100%.

Imagine, I think machines are designed to be 'manipulated' based on the intensity of your workout. With Elipticals, you can change the incline, the resistance and of course your own speed.
So whatever I was doing before was making me burn less calories than what I did last time.
Re: Yay, I figured out how to increase calories burnt on Elyptical Trainer Machine!!!
I don't think carrots are making people gain weight...I know WW change it...but they do every year...
as for the calories on the machines (I have no expertise on this subject, except my own experience)...for me...the treadmill burns the most calories...but I usually run at an 8 min mile or less...(I only use the treadmill so that I can run in the morning when it is dark out...too many bad stories)...I burn about half the amount on the elliptical machine...but I would say that the elliptical machine is better than walking...and the elliptical machine is definitely better if you have knee issues
also I heard once that since women have a higher percentage of fat...that you should lower the weight you input into machines by 10-15%...b/c the machines are based on men's weights...anyone else hear this?

Its hard to believe that anyone would gain weight eating carrots, but people will think of anything. Eating a carrot or 2 a day wont make you gain, but eating 3 lbs of carrots a day will, as they are high in sugar. There are people out there who will find a loophole anywhere, not use common sense, than blame the company for the consequences. Because people were doing this and going well over thier points for the day, in turn gaining weight. WW then had to change carrots to be counted as points. I dont dispute that the elliptical machine is a good workout, but the calorie counter (on any machine) is at best an estimate and NOT to be taken as an absolute perfect indicator of how many calories someone burns. Plain and simple. If the machine says you burned 500 calories, that does not mean you have absolutely burned that many, could be more could be less. Someone at sometime probably decided that they could binge on 500 calories and burn it off when the machine reached 500. If people (not saying you guys, but others out there in the world) are using the calorie counter as a way to justify a binge eating habit, they are sorely mistaken. That is why the company will even tell you that the counter is NOT exact.

yes...i see what you are saying...I would definitely like to err on the lower side...
I wonder if the carrot eaters were also BLTers... (Bites, Licks and Tasters)

They probably were BLTers! The newest thing that was changed on WW is that onions are now points. Now if you put a slice on your burger fine, but people were frying up a whole onion with Pam and eating it, in order to make a '0 point bloomin onion'. What will people think of next?

They are NOT accurate. When I go on the treadmill, and will step off for a secon, it still continues to burn calories when Im not on it. It is an estimated amount depeneding on how much you weigh, and the resistance you are working at.
