I called and spoke with someone there and the convo went like this.
me: I have a question, what time does school let out on Fridays?
woman: 3 I believe. Why?
me: My wedding is at 3 on a Friday.
woman: Ooh.. that would present a problem because of buses and all.
ugh!!!! And the Deacon is on vacation until sometime next week. Common sense is telling me that he HAD to realize about school dismissal so i'm HOPING they have a 1/2 day or somethin on that date.
If not then I have to find another church.

This su cks. It seems like this would be a very common problem, for basically anyone who gets married on a Friday. Parishes really need to find a solution to this problem. Can you move your wedding? Even if it starts at 3:30, I think that would make a huge difference.

oh man, you think they'd know. How big is the school? If it's a small elementary school with a separate lot, you might only be talking about 2 or 3 buses.

Sorry to burst your bubble... but changing churches isn't going to do much. They are all equally as clueless!!!
Also - you might run into that problem with most other churches as well.
We also have the exact same situation. we are doing 3:30 ceremony though. I'm not sure what time school gets out... but I'm sure it's about the same time.

I'm sure they can work something out. It's not like you're the first person to get married there on a Friday.
If you want the info for HNM let me know.

I looked at my calendar...public schools will be out that day because the 18th is Yom Kippur. Darn Catholic school not off for Jewish holidays!

Re: yeaah.. I think i gotta change my church
The school is K-8th Grade.
What makes it worse is it becomes a 1 way street during school hours and now there is no parking lot for my guests to park in.
The one thing i have going for me right now is that my cocktail doesn't start till 7 so if i move my wedding to 3:30 it's not THAT big of a deal. But still!!!!!
::sigh:: your right though, I can't be the FIRST friday wedding so there HAS to be sometimes that the women isn't telling me.
Guess i gotta wait for the Deacon to come back from vaca next week. Waiting is the worst part.
One of the other options i have is St. Boniface and there school is no longer open. Or FH's church OLV but it's much smaller. I'm saaad.

I would definitely move the ceremony time, especially if you have a really strong connection with your home parish. The church where you get married is something you'll always remember!

You're getting married at Blessed Sacrament right?
I used to go there... and when I graduated (2000) we got out at 2:30-- I'm almost positive that's still the same. Maybe call the school and ask. I'll see if I can find out in the meantime.
If you don't get an answer, when school starts up again, I'll look down the block for you (I live RIGHT there)- so I'll let you know what traffic is like at 3!

OH! also to the best of my knowledge, ALL the buses line up on Rose Avenue. The main entrance to the church is on the other side, so you shouldn't encounter problems with buses.

That's what i was just thinking. Cuz when i went to religion we had to enter on Rose.. not Euclid St. But for camp i had to go through euclid.
So the parking lot would mainly be fillied with teachers cars and stuff? The kids and buses would be on the other side?

When I was there, NO ONE was parked in the parking lot b/c the parking lot doubles as a school yard during the day (so no teachers' cars-they park on Rose), and the parents would all park along Mckeon because they didn't want kids exiting through the parking lot as cars were pulling out.
Again, this is going back 9 years ago when I graduated, but if it's still the same, I can't forsee you having any problems. The kids do exit through Mckeon, but not the 'bus kids'. And the kids always walked out to the left, not to the right (where the church is)
Plus, I'm almost positive that they get out at 2:30

Just be thankful for one big thing: You thought of this NOW instead of next summer right before your wedding.
That stinks - Im surprised he didn't realize that when u talked to him. Probably he didn't realize it was a Friday...

Don't stress until you get in touch with the Deacon to see what he says. there has to be some kind of solution!! St. Boniface is beautiful though if you end up having to go there. I almost go married there!!!!
