Yes China or No China???

Original post by summerbridetobe

Did you/are you registering for fine china?? I'm very torn and I've been asking opinions and people have very mixed responses. Some think without a doubt you need to get it beacuse you will never get it again in your life and you will appreciate so much. Other think its ridiculous, a waste of money, and even rude to ask for something so much money. Plus we dont live together yet so we will be needing so much stuff.

Just to add we are looking at Lenox Opal Innocence which I think is $90 at macys and $120 at BBB (why the big difference i have NO idea!)

Thanks for your opinions!!!

I cannot wait to have a house with a dining room and so china was a big part of our registry. To me, you can buy everyday china or all sorts of things for yourself but fine china just is something you'll keep forever. I think it depends on the person. My best friend doesn't have a dining room and has no plans of ever doing formal dinners so she chose not to. I grew up in a house where a traditional sit down Sunday dinner was in the dining room and I love that. Totally your choice - go with your gut.

Thanks so much for all of your opinions!!! It really is helpful to hear all the thoughts and ideas.... i do like the idea of getting a cheaper set or a boxed set, that way we can have it but it wont break the bank(for other people!), but another part of me is if your gonna get it you might as well GET IT and get the expensive set you want... hmm decisions decisions...

I think it really comes down to the personal decision and preference. I do think I am someone who hopes to have fancy family dinners and holidays(when we have a house someday!) so i do think i would use it, my issue is more like is it worth risking not getting the other necessities on our registry?

Re: Yes China or No China???

I registered for China and nearly everyone bought me a place setting for my shower. I lucked out and there was a super huge sale at Macy's right before my shower - something like buy a place setting get a free soup bowl and a % off and it was reduced on sale. The same thing happened with my crystal stemware so I receive a lot of that too.

I say register for it because you never know.

This is my china...49.99 per place setting (+20% off coupon at BBB). FH and I couldn't bring ourselves to buy $100+ china settings...and we really didn't see anything that we both went 'WOW' about...this was our compromise ;)

Is that Noritake Crestwood? If so, I think you and I have the same set, lol.

We registered for it. I would like to one day take over some holidays, so I think we'll use it.

Same here.. Once we have a family of our own I think we will get use out of it.

I registered for the exact kind you want (Opal Innocence). I have to say I think its beautiful and I love it!!! I can't wait to one day have a beautiful dining room with a china closet displaying these beautiful plates. Keep in mind at BB&B EVERYONE uses the 20% off coupons they mail constantly. I only registered for 10 place settings instead of 12- thinking I wouldn't need that many and if I did in the future since this is a pattern that has been around and is timeless you can always pick up more in the future if you want.

PS My friends and I have all decided to make sure we use our new china (sooner than when we start hosting holidays) we are all going to take turns hosting fun dinner parities with our spouses and friends! :)

We registered for China, but only because we already have a house together, and just about everything we need. We added a few other items to the registry that needed updating, along with some new bedding, luggage and misc items. We ordered the china as a splurge, and becasue I LOVE to entertain. If you need a lot of other stuff, and you don't like to entertain, DON'T register for the china because you could register for more useful things.

Re: Yes China or No China???

I did, but its all about personal preference.

And let me say that i never understood the whole 'its rude to make someone buy you something expensive' do ppl realize that for a shower, nobody is obligated to buy anything specific lol. Expensive items are for close family members, bridal party chipping in for it if they want, or somebody who wants to buy expensive things. People usually have an amount they want to spend and guess what, they look at your registry for items in that price, nobody is going to say omg i only wanted to spend $75 but she has a $200 item on there and now it means i have to buy that lol, makes no sense to me. People will pay whatever they wanted to pay, expensive items on a registry wont make them spend more.

If I am close to somebody then yes i will spend more and have a certain amount i want to spend. If everything is low cost on the registry its honestly annoying bc then i have to buy several things to make up that amount. If im close to the person, i prefer for there to be items that are a bit more pricey, i dont want to buy like 4 $50 items or so. Somebody once did this, and everything was very inexpensive on their registry, well i had no plans of spending just $20,30,50, so now i had to buy many things and let me say i was in the store forever bc as you know half the things are gone so having to find whats left and available at the store and to do this for 4-6 stuff can be annoying. Keep in mind that people like your parents, in-laws, grandparents want to get you something special, they dont want to get you small items.

We registered and only got 4 place settings. We returned them, and went to the Royal doulton outlet in Woodbury Commons and bought just the dinner and salad plates. Sot much cheaper and we got the exact pattern we wanted. I highly recommend that! I don't think we need the cup and saucer! I'd like to also buy the soup bowls another time. The outlets are great, and you can save a lot of $ by just buying the pieces you want rather than the whole place settings.

I say YES To China - it's the only time you will get it! unless you want to go and buy it for yourself for 100-200 a place setting!!!

Re: Yes China or No China???

Nope, I won't register for China. In my eyes, its too old school and old fashioned for me. With todays technology and sets, there are GORGEOUS sets that you can use for guests, and everyday. My motto of registering: I am registering for the life I HAVE, not the life I imagine myself having some day.
(Case in point: When I helped my sister register, she registered for TONS and TONS of bakeware. She's never baked a day in her life, and avoids cooking like the plague. Her reasoning was that once she has kids, she'll want to 'bake cookies with them'. This is the kind of imagined, stereotyped picture of Donna-Reed-wifehood/ motherhood that so many girls fall into it. If you don't enjoy/ do it now, then chances are, a ring on your finger or kids won't magically integrate cooking skills or desires into your life. JMO. )
