Last night, we tried sleeping with our 3 1/2 month old husky pup tied to the bed as she cries all night if she's in her crate downstairs. She did okay as far as not peeing or anything but went nuts with our cats who sleep with us. The pup and cats still do not get along after over a month. So my 2 part question: 1. how long did it take your pup and cats to get along? 2. is this tying to the bed approach okay? She still cried a little bit but I think that was b/c DH got home late from work and she wanted to play.

we have a trainer who told us this is TOTALLY fine. We were trying to break our puppy of the sleeping in the bed habit. He said to bring her bed that she sleeps in when she's left home for the day - bring that into the bedroom and tie her to the post of the bed so she sleeps in there. This will deter her from peeing in the middle of the night. It's totally fine.
Whether you can BEAR it is another question. I couldnt' handle the constant crying and whimpering.
It took till like 8 months to get the cats and dog getting along. the cats still hiss if she gets too 'friendly', but I think that is normal!

We were thinking of getting her a dog bed, but I didnt' know if dogs actually slept in them or not! I could just see spending a lot of $$ and then her not using it.... I just need a good nght's sleep!

Tying the dog to the bed?? Sounds strange to me....what about putting the crate in the bedroom? Our pooch SLEEPS in her crate through the night except when FH lets her stay out and sleep with him in the bed or she'll sleep on the floor. Some dogs and cats NEVER get along...it's a territory thing...cat was there first, sees dog as an invasion. Sometimes they end up being great friends.
I don't see how tying the dog to the bed to force her to sleep in the doggie bed is a good idea. She's still a puppy and is going to cry.

it's instead of a crate. My dog never was crate trained, so if we had put her in a crate in the bedroom she would have bugged out. She sleeps in her bed during the day (in the kitchen) and whenever else she kind of gets tired. So in the effort to get her off our bed, we put it in the bedroom. BUT the tying is not to keep her in her bed! It's so she doesnt' get up and pee! It's part of housebreaking. They wont' go in their bed area. This is only suggested to be done wtih pups that can hold their bladder. Not for like an 8 week old puppy that can't hold it and you have to take out in the middle of the night....

The pup is crate trained, but she just hates it so much! I guess we didn't introduce it to her right. And we want her to sleep with us anyway. We may get rid of the crate at this point and just section off the kitchen for when we're not home. I'm hoping that now the pup and the cats have to share the bedroom it will speed up the 'getting along' process.
