Ok, I know that my wedding day should be one of the, if not THE, most wonderful day in my life. But applying that to every irrational price tag that comes my way doesn't sit well with me. I guess my question is
why is it so easy for us to become prey to the notion that we should ?spend spend spend for our wedding- food we won't touch, flowers that will surely die, and a dress we will wear once, and MAYBE pass down to our daughter one day?

Re: Yet another QOTD
I don't know, but I agree with your frustrations. I keep trying to temper my own planning and/or expectations - because I really don't want to over-spend. I try to remind myself that it's just a big party - and while it's the biggest day of my life for now - it will be overshadowed in years to come by our future children and their accomplishments. So, I am trying to stay lighthearted about the entire event - and make sure I pan it so that it will be fun for us and our guests - and economical in the long run.
Wordy - but maybe it makes sense to some...

I am 110% with your fustrations...When FH & I started to plan this wedding, we both agreed we were not goin to spend more then 30K...So far, we have stuck to it by making some conscience decisions....We have cut back in areas & splurged in others...All I say is, it might be my special day, but it is only 5 hours (in my case 6 hours)!!!!
remember what is important about your wedding day, is the committment & vow of love your FH & you are taking...It is not about the $$ or the wedding reception you are throwing...JMO I think we all forget that sometimes bc we get caught up in the planning!!

Lets be honest here lady.. if it was all about the love and commitment and joining of our lives.. we would all be having small ceremonies and then maybe just going out to dinner after! It's just as much about the party as it is the ceremony... otherwise why would I be spending so much freakin money!!!! lol... I don't even want the party! My other half does

Hey I was up for the small wedding, remember my other half needs to invite everyone I am up for a party just as much as everyone, but I think we can all agree that the spending does get out of hand with all the extras!!! I guess the philosophy should be, we are spending this much already, why not spend more

I am all for a great party-I throw them all the time- it's not even the party really or the food. I mean, $2000 for a dj- I'd rather put big speakers on my IPOD! and the flowers- don't even get me started.
I just feel like these vendors take advantage of us- the two things you will always pay out your nose for- a wedding and a funeral...though sometimes FH jokes that they are one and the same! LOL

Do what I'm doing - have it in Florida!!! The important people will be there
FH and I have huge families. We're paying, but we have a 'must invite' list from our parents - that includes family I never even knew existed.
So yes, it's selfish, but hey, it's our day.

Re: Yet another QOTD
I guess since this is the day that I am sure most of us have dreamed of our entire lives and you the best of everything...and I think in NY ESPECIALLY ON LONG ISLAND....we are conditioned to want the very best of everything and that means spending lots of money...which is sad I guess....We want to make sure we out do people that we know maybe????

Re: Yet another QOTD
I know what you are saying...and I mean, we have standards for ourselves too. I want things to be a certain way because that's the way I am.
but if I went into a florist and asked for a bunch of flowers, it would be one price, but if I asked for those SAME flowers, mention WEDDING, and ask for a ribbon around it, it's double or triple the price.
I guess you can tell, I am doing my wedding budget so I'm venting. Not to mention FH saying to me last night 'where are we going to live on April 24 2006!

Re: Yet another QOTD
I know - I keep going back and forth between 'why am I spending all this money, think of the bills I could pay/furniture I could buy/vacation I could plan with the same money' and then 'it is the only time I will ever be married (or so I hope ) so I shouldn't cheap out on it'
Sign. I blame Long Island, nothing is cheap here (jk )

LOL that's EXACTLY how I feel...especially if we stay in Brooklyn- we'll probably be living in a closet any way!
I just don't want to be paying for my ONE day for the rest of my days (or at least til my 2.1 kids goes to college!)

Re: Yet another QOTD
I just can't come to terms why if you have a big wedding you almost never have enough to buy the house you want!!! It's like you must make a crucial decision!!! I feel irresponsible spending all this money on the wedding and then not having a nice place to live!
