Actually I think jewish people do have baby showers after the baby is born. Don't quote me on that though but I know they usually won't have one before. My family isn't so superstitious or religious so I probably will still have one

My family is old fashioned and superstitious and won't buy anyone knives as wedding gifts. We can't use knives or scissors to open shower gifts either!

Not really sure what this is about.

same here
i thought it was a jewish thing
you are not supposed to register for knives

possibly
im italian / jewish
we dont believe in baby showers either

You know my mom just told me about the whole no baby shower thing. I told her I'd be bucking that tradition, or lack thereof, so she'd better prepare now.

same here - i am totally having a baby shower! FSIL made out like a bandit for her babyshower - it was insane!!

So Jewish people don't believe in baby showers?

Don't get mad, but in a way baby showers make me nervous. I know this is an awful thing to say, but g*d forbid, something were to happen to the baby. I know that sounds horrible, but like too bad the showers can't happen AFTER the baby is born.

i think a lot of families dont believe in them......but i think that is why you have one towards the very end of your pregnancy - so that the chance of something happening is less....i mean anything can still happen but these days the further along the pregnancy is the more you can tell about a baby's health and stuff.....its still a risk but i am definitley having one.....FSIL had so much fun at hers and she got sooooo many things. it was much more exciting than her bridal shower!

Re: Yet another registry question: Knives

jewish people do not believe in buying anything for the baby before it is born; nor bringing anything into the house for the baby before he/she is born

you can have a 'shower' aftwerwards but people usually just buy / send gifts - bring them to the bris or baby naming

My family is like that too. But you can give it as a gift as long as there is a penny attached to it.

My family doesn't believe in baby showers, but the newer generation and older has compromised. We can have a baby shower, but the stuff cannot be put into the room until the baby is born.

We can't use knives or scissors at showers either. My dad;s family (italian) used to not believe in Baby Showers either -- they didn't go to my mom's (irish) for my sister. That is a long gone supersition for my family.
