So let me start by saying that I'm not Jewish. Neither is FH or any of part of our families.
Our wedding date is set for 9/22/07, which is Yom Kippur next year. First, I didn't know that was Yom Kippur, secondly even if I did, I didn't know what it meant that Yom Kippur was a holy day.
Now a few girls who I went to school with, WHO I DID NOT EVEN INTEND TO INVITE TO THE WEDDING, are flipping out at me. They're complaining about how inconsiderate I am and how they're going to be hard pressed to make it and I should consider rescheduling.
I seriously didn't even know they knew the date of our wedding b/c I certainly haven't been talking to them about it. I haven't even spoken to some of these girls in literally months.
While I don't mean to sound inconsiderate, it really doesn't affect us. Very few of our friends are Jewish and maybe only two of three of this group were even on our guest list.
Why should I have to continually answer questions and justify our decision? It's becoming infuriating and I'm on the verge of blowing my top and being very rude. I don't want to get to that point!

Re: Yom Kippur
You shouldn't really worry about it.
You said you're not even inviting these people to the wedding... so maybe now it's time to make that clear to them... or make it clear to them that you cannot schedule YOUR wedding around THEM. Otherwise, let it go, and they'll get the hint when they don't get the invite.

If the holy day does not involve you or any of your guests, who cares, why should u change your day!

I wouldn't worry about it and don't let these people upset you. They're not being invited and those that want to attend will be there for you and your FH!

The nerve of some people! ARGH! I seriously would say 'Oh, well it's no problem because we are having a smallish wedding and NO ONE we are inviting happens to be Jewish!'
Hopefully the hint will be taken. People just drive me crazy....

Someone is always going to have something to say about it. You can never make everyone happy. As long as it doesn't affect you or the people that you planned on inviting then don't worry about it.
I had a person ask me my wedding date and then she proceeded to flip out because her boys would still be in school then. #1 - the wedding isn't until 7pm, why does it matter if they still have school? #2 - your boys aren't invited anyway. Find a babysitter!

Well, now you should definitely invite them! You know they won't go and maybe they will send a gift. LOL

That is great, why do people with kids think everything revolves around them

Thats a great idea. Also Yom Kippur is not always on the same day of the year. Jewish holidays go by the Jewish calendar not the roman. Most non Jewish people would not even think of checking the date. I personally am in an interfaith relationship so we had to check the dates of both Easter and Passover to make sure there was no conflict. I wouldn't worry yourself about it.

I just got married on the first night of Hanukkah... 2 of my BMs are Jewish and about 50% of my guests and they were all there. Granted Hanukkah is not the holiest day for them...but I don't think Yom Kippur is either.

Completely unrelated to your wedding date choice, but for the sake of correct information, Yom Kippur is actually the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

I think if it doesnt affect anyone, go for it - if you are planning on inviting any Jewish people, there is a chance they won't go... however, I'm Jewish, and if I wre invited to a close friend's wedding on Yom Kippur, I would still go....

Actually it is.
Eva and John - If you and your FH aren't Jewish and hardly anyone on your guest list is either don't worry about it. You'll probably get more comments like this, but just let them roll off your back. 'You're having your wedding on Yom Kippur?' 'Yep, thankfully, nobody on our guest list has a conflict.' Period.
Yom Kippur is THE holiest day of the Jewish year. i agree w/ everything that stephanielyse said.

Word. The only thing I would do is check your list to make sure there aren't any really important folks (ie bridal party) that are Jewish. For me, it would matter; I realize I'm probably the exception (im used to being the exception on here anyway), but I would skip the wedding. Still, as long as your key peeps have no conflict, do what you need to do.

Re: Yom Kippur
First of all you don;t owe ANYONE an explanation. They are not invited anyway, nor should you feel obligated to tell them. I would honestly ignore them...or just nod and let it be.
People have some NERVE around wedding time...assuming they're invited...complaining about the craziest things....PLEASE.....
As long as this doesn't affect your family or close friends, who cares?
