Your favorite teacher and why ???

Since Im planning to teach within the next few years, I thought this would be fun...

What 'made' some of your favorite teachers become your favorites ? What was it that they did or said ?

Alice Hally, 5th grade, Will Rogers Elementary School, Houston, Texas.

She was former Irish Catholic nun (complete with heavy Irish brogue) who left the convent to teach public school.

She was the first teacher I ever had who didn't treat me as a nusiance or a pest (I talked an unbelievable amount and was super curious about EVERYTHING....still am) and who actually listened to me patiently and answered my questions. She cultivated me and channeled my energies into creative writing, reading, and drama - I was a star thespian in grade school.

I had a lot of fave teachers.... the best ones had qualities like being compassionate, understanding, going the extra mile in making sure everyone felt special.
Anna, are you going for your degree now? I'm dying to change my profession. I've been thinking lately that I would like to start to teach, but I don't know how to go about it. Any suggestions?

Re: Your favorite teacher and why ???

This is a fun one! I have a few that I will always remember:

Ms. Kanter - 1st Grade - she ALWAYS made me feel good about my work, I know, 1st grade work, no big deal, BUT, everything I did was good to her!! My art work especially! I still have the awards from her for being the best behaved, etc... She was great, I think about her every now and then....

Ms. Ankro - 4th Grade - when I was at the end of 3rd and found out who I was getting... EVERYONE tried to scare us!! She ended up being one of the most fun teachers I've ever had!

Mrs. Matarazza - Computer/Word Processing - 11th & 12th grade - I felt bad for her, she was older and because it wasn't an 'important' subject people treated her horribly! HOWEVER, I did not!! And she told me when I graduated HS, that I will go far in the Administrative Field, she was absolutely RIGHT! I am NOW a Legal Secretary - okay, so it's not that fancy! But I think because of her and the skills she taught me, that's what got me here... Lord knows I didn't go to Katherine Gibbs or anything like that!

There's more... but I've babbled enough!

My fave was Ms. Blum-Grade 4. She did so many fun hands on social studies lessons for the explorers and the colonies! She also had music appreciation every thursday where we got to listen to a new composer. All of my classical music knowledge I owe to her!
