Your opinions please...

Hello Ladies!

I would like to ask for your opinion.

My FH and I are teachers overseas. We only come home for just a few months in the summer time usually. As you can imagine, this makes planning a wedding very difficult.

We will be home next summer. In my mind, I would like to forego all the traditional parties and showers and just have our wedding this summer. We are having a very small, intimate wedding of only around 60 guests, and I am sure we can put it all together very quickly.

FH on the other hand thinks we will be too rushed. He wants to wait until the following summer (2011) and would like to have an engagement party next summer instead. It is a nice idea since we would not have seen our friends and families in a year and a half. And will give us time to look around at halls. But I am not sure if it's really necessary for 2 people with only 60 guests and on a tight enough budget already to be throwing an additional party. I would much rather save the money to use for our big day.

We are having a hard time reaching an agreement about this. I say our wedding can be the big celebration. FH seems to want to milk the engagement thing. He's worried if we don't do all the traditional wedding parties, we will regret it. His sister has also implaneted the idea in his head that we must do all these things to get gifts :)

I realize this is something we need to work out between us.. but any opinions or advice, maybe points we haven't considered..would be really appreciated. My mother is driving me crazy about this already...

Also-- since I probably won't be having a bridal shower (which I am perfectly okay with) would it then be possible to combine the engagement and shower into one party instead? Give it a different title like 'pre-wedding party?'... Anyone hear of anything like this before?

hmm this is a difficult situation.. i feel like people might not want to come to an e-party/bridal shower/and wedding all in one summer..

I really think your best bet would be to not have an e-party or maybe instead of having everyone -do an e-dinner with just your close family and bridal party? This way people can come to celebrate but its not a huge deal. As far as getting gifts goes, you should have a bridal shower this way you get everything you registered for then, and I would think people close to you would send an e-gift regardless of if you had a party or not, we got gifts from ppl right when we got engaged.

Its like wait to 2011 to get married...or just skip out on something so you can have all of next summer to enjoy everything.... good luck!!

Personally, I'd wait til 2011. I like to take my time when I'm doing things like this and I don't want to feel rushed. Don't do it for the gifts though. Another note, throwing an engagement party for yourself can sometimes seem a little gift-grabby. Traditionally someone else throws it for the bride and groom. I tend to agree with ncarlo that I wouldn't want to go to all three parties in a matter of 3 mos. IMHO, you only get to plan a wedding once, (hopefully!) why not take your time and enjoy it while you can!! Good luck!!

I love the idea of combining parties, especially when time is an issue. My fiance and I had an engagement/housewarming party when we moved in together last year and it was great. I personally would not wait another year just to follow tradition or formalities, unless that is important to you. I would just have a bridal shower, but its really up to you and your fiance. What ever you choose will be perfect for the both of you.
