Your thoughts on childrens gift lists and parents proliferation of them? lol.

Original post by Misty

Someone in my family has made sport of sending out a mass email to the whole family every holiday season, containing lists made up by their children, of items they picked from the Toys R Us Holiday Big book. They send the lists out, with prices, asking that they be notified when someone purchases something off the list so that they can avoid duplicates.

Thoughts?

just thinking about the comparison to a wedding registry...isn't it tacky to tell people where you are registered...

'One glaring incident that stands out in my mind is when one child in my family threw a gift I gave him on the floor and said 'well, this wasn't on my list so it's going back', and started tearing into the next present. It just seems like evidence of a really spoiled generation rearing it's ugly head in my family. '

I can't believe that. My parents would have punished me forever if I pulled a stunt like that.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having children make Christmas lists. My family has always done that. We still do as adults. BUT, the lists stay on the fridge for Santa ( ) and the members of my immediate family - Mom, Dad, brothers and sisters. I know that when we were younger other relatives would call and ask what we wanted. My mom would list the smaller things off the lists and my mom was always told what was bought. But there was no unsolicited sending of the list. I think that is out of line. If people want suggestions, they will call and ask.

Agreed. I'd be sent to my room immediately to be dealt with later.

I never got to ASK for anything. Be grateful for what you got period. You want a doll you usually ended up saying it... 'gee I sure with Santa would bring me that'. I learned FAST not to ask the Mall santa for crap unless I ran it by the parents first or I'd never get a thing!

I never got more than maybe a few gifts. Christmas has nothing to do with gifts in our family. The tree for us means more than the gifts sometimes. For us it was about the spirit and being at one with our family and ourselves. I know I go on and on here about not being religious but what I mean is not religious in the way others interpret it to be. But as a kid and even now.. Christmas has NOTHING to do with Gifts.. but with a celebration of life and it is my true 'thanksgiving'.

I hope I can pass that on to my kids. Believing in make-believe people who fly over your house and drop off gifts is good for only a short while. I can barely remember ever believing in the fat guy anyway except as a ceremony token of the time. Like 'Ok, Santa's not real, but if i act nice to him maybe mom & dad will be watching'.

Now.. behavior was BIG on our list.. My birthday is in August.. shortly thereafter was my brother in early Septemeber.. we were lectured God is watching so much that we were terrified if we acted up after Sept that we'd get no tree for Xmas.

Kids spoiled these days? Yep, but what can you do?

i think its a little presumptuous to email it out to everyone.....
it would be a good idea to have one made, and if people need an idea they can ask for one off the list... IMO

I would never ever do this. People buy my children gifts that they can afford and put thought into. To make a list like that seems greedy to me.

As a Mom and an Aunt I think this soo rude.

I would never send my BIL's a list of things for my son. Nor would they do that to us for there children. I would never volunteer the information, they would need to ask for it,

As a child, I would write a letter to santa, my parents would give me some stuff off the list and the rest I would get only when family or friends asked my parents what I wanted for christmas. Once I was old enough to know about the 'SANTA' thing, people would ask me directly and only then would I give them an 'idea'.

DH and plan to follow the same plans with Geno. I cannot imagine, sending out a request on my sons behalf for xmas presents.

I ask my FI nieces and Nephews to email me a list. I don't think its rude. depending on who it was sent to. To have it sent to Aunt or Uncle No but to send it to 3rd cousin yes!

I think if you asked for an idea on what they would like it's fine. but to just send it out....kinda rude!

Being a Mom I only tell them what my son doesn't need! In other words 'NO MORE STUFFED ANIMALS!!' & 'If it doesn't have a volume control I don't want to see it! '

AMEN! Well said, Tracey!
