High heels and grass?

I love the idea of outdoor wedding so thats what we are doing, but I'm freaking out because I also love the idea of high heels ... and so do the women that I'm inviting... but this place is all grass ... and I'm so dumb I didn't even think about it until now.

Any ideas on how to 'cover' the grass... I thought of stepping stones to help heels walk but they are so expensive... Temporary paver are expensive to buy but I don't know if I can even rent.

For aisle, I might consider getting piece of plywood and stapling aisle runner on it before covering edges with petals.

I have about 100 people to sit at ceremony, I think that will cover about 3000 square feet, right?

Any ideas?

Re: High heels and grass?

Best way may be to let your female guests know that the ceremony will take place on grass.
They can bring flat shoes to change into, or you can provide flip flops like a slipper basket.

Plywood is not so cheap, and it has to be fastened together somehow. You can't just lay down sheets and they stay together, they will slide on the grass.

What about renting a dance floor ? That can be laid over grass and would cost you probably about the same as buying all the plywood sheets.

If you have your heart set on wearing heels, then wrap the heel portion in plastic wrap to keep them from getting muddy.

Re: High heels and grass?

does your location have any thing in place for this? especially for the aisle they may, I'm sure they've experienced this before....you may be worrying for nothing! I would call and find out....otherwise, maybe you can get some wedges for the ceremony and change into regular heels afterwards?

Re: High heels and grass?

don't stress ... there's always a solution. the plywood aisle could work if you secure them together. you can purchase flat metal plates with screw holes on each end and use them to screw together the plywood sheets. plywood i think is 4'x6' so it should work for the aisle. you could cover the plywood with the outdoor grass carpet (astro turf about 35 cents per sq ft) and then your aisle runner. i suggest stapling it all down to avoid tripping hazzard... also.. test it out b/4 the big day. or you can rent staging platforms which run about $80 for a 4'x8' section and are about 1ft off the ground.

as for the guests... well they'll survive in heels on grass for a bit. i assume the reception is not on grass? make sure the area is mowed tightly like a golf course.

if you're worried.. then price w/ rental companies the outdoor parquet floors (20'x24' is around $1000) or the outdoor plywood floors and ask what they cover the plywood with.

Re: High heels and grass?

my cousin got married in an outdoor ceremony on grass a few years back. Most of us wore flip flops or wedge shoes and just got fancier ones. Honestly if just the ceremony is outside I would just worry about you as far as walking down the aisle your guests will be fine in heels. However, if you reception is on grass you might want to spread that word, b/c heels can get ruined that way. My cousin rented a dance floor for the reception which worked out nicely. Good luck! I hope it all works out!

Re: High heels and grass?

its not that bad. My friend had an outdoor wedding in a garden with grass and the high heels didn't stick into the ground too badly. It really depends on the weather though, if it rains the night before, the ground will be muddy or still wet and that might cause the heels to sink in more. I can suggest wearing wedges for shoes? I think providing a slipper basket for the guests might be nice, so that they can wear them during the ceremony if the ground is too soft.

Re: High heels and grass?

i went to an outdoor grassy wedding and it wasnt that bad. i wore heels and they sank into the grass and then the ceremony was over and that was it.

i dont think it is anything to lose sleep over.

if you are worried about your own shoes i suggest buying wedges for the ceremony and change your shoes afterwards

Re: High heels and grass?

You can do the plywood aisle or as an added touch have baskets of flip flops available for them to change into as they arrive at your ceremony this way they can put their shoes back on when done

Re: High heels and grass?

I just wrote in the invitations that heels were 'not suggested' since we'd be on grass...was alot easier than trying to cover....just an idea.

Re: High heels and grass?

I agree with Hamptons Bride

I didn't try to think of 'fixing' the grass/ground.
My wedding was outdoors I just had printed on my invites OUTDOOR GARDEN WEDDING.
I wore wedge heels , worked out perfect and I spread the word to all my guest and freinds in case they missed it about the entire wedding being a tented outdoor event.

I did buy my BM flipflops but not all the guests but it is a thought.

Re: High heels and grass?

You girls are great, great advice, thank you

I don't know why but every now and then I get a panic attack about something in the wedding and if no one is around to calm me down about it, I just can't think straight and in my bridezilla head it seems so tragic I just want to call whole wedding off.

I hate that feeling ... but I'm good now... its easy, one pair of shoes for ceremony one for reception .... and can still get the height I want!

Reception is in tent, with good sturdy floor... no worries there... same for cocktail hour

Ceremony is going to be short and to the point, I'm begging officiant to cut out the religious babble down to 20 min.

I love wedges but never seen wedding ones... found some googling ...( look for a shoe vote coming to your forum soon).

Now, only person to talk out of wearing 4' stiletto heals is my mom ...

Re: High heels and grass?

I would ask the tent company if you can rent extra flooring and try to make pathways. Every Easter I remind myself not to wear heels.
I hate when my heels sink into the grass!
Good Luck, I hope you find something!
