Sales Tax on Gown?
Has anyone ordered a gown from a bridal salon on Long Island and had it shipped out of state to save on sales tax? I live in NJ and I don't want to pay sales tax if I order my gown on LI because there is no sales tax in NJ so I was trying to figure a way around that and someone had told me if I get the gown shipped to my house and then bring it to the bridal shop myself, they wouldn't charge me sales tax - is this true?

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
if your state doesn't charge sales tax that would be true. BUT how would you get the Bridal Salon to ship it?You can't order from these bridal salons online, so you would have to pay for the dress in full in person on LONG island which means you would have to pay the sales tax in which that state charges.
I have never heard of brick and mortar stores shipping bridal gowns out of their stores.
SORRY...Maybe I am wrong..

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
It's true you'd save on sales tax but how much is the shipping cost?

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
This is really only worth it if you have a very expensive gown. Otherwise the shipping of the dress (it arrives at the salon then they ship it) and the insurance can be $$.

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
I was told that it wouldn't be worth the cost of shipping. If you order it online from a place in New York then I would have it shipped out of state. If you buy in a store you can ask if they will send an empty box for you and not charge you sales tax...you can try that. Usually though they won't do it.

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
I ordered my dress in Westchester, the bridal salon is only charging me $75 to mail it to me in NJ to save NY state tax. So I am saving a few hundred by doing this. They are mailing my dress UPS so it is trackable. Then when I get it, I bring it to the salon and they will store it before my fittings.

I got mine in brooklyn and it is being sent to my parents in CT and I need to get a letter notorized proving they live there and then all i pay is $65 for shipping and when i get the dress i bring it to the for my fitting so $65 is alot better then paying $700 in sales tax

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
I was raised in Philly and I knew a lot of girls would go to Delaware to shop for wedding related stuff so they wouldn't have to pay tax.As others have said, I would say buy online if you know which dress you want. Otherwise I would have to say shipping costs would probably be about the same as the taxes/

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
i did this- i go to school in MA and bought the dress on LI - it cost $150 to ship because of the all the insurance - but it was cheaper and i got to try it on at home which was funbut it is important that you ship where somebody is there to sign - the UPS guymade the doorman sign specfically for the dress and made him aware of what was in the package- the doorman even kept it close by
most bridal stores are used to this trick - i am getting my fittings done at the store i bought the dress from
be aware that it can be expensive to have fittings done at a different place then you bought the dress

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
My MOH got her wedding gown at the Wedding Salon in Manhasset, she had it shipped to NJ and she didn't have to pay tax.Another friend lived in Brooklyn, got her dress at Kleinfeld, had to get a notorized letter that she lives in NJ- that was pretty easy and she didn't pay tax either

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
Thanks girls! I guess I will ask my bridal salon if it is possible to do this and see what the shipping charge is, to make sure it is worth it and I will be saving money.

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
I got my dress from the Wedding Salon of Manhasset and the woman helping me when I ordered my dress told me if I had a family member living out of state with the same last name as me, I could ship the dress there and save myself a few hundred of dollars. I am definitely doing that. You should definitely ask your bridal salon.

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
If you live in NJ it should not be a problem-- where it gets sticky is if you live in NY and you try to avoid the sales tax and you ship out of state to a friend or family member-- Kleinfeld makes you get a form notarized saying you live out of state-- Anyway- your dress will be shipped there, then you bring it in to the salon when you are ready for alterations.

Re: Sales Tax on Gown?
I bought mine at Saks. I'm having it shipped tomorrow - to be received on Thursday at a friend's house in Jersey. I'm still a little worried about it but it's saving me a few hundred in sales tax. They suggested it and I didn't need to do anything but give them an address. Shipping was $75Good luck
