Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))
Hi Ladies-I am a NYC teacher....and I hate my job with a passion. Every week its a new pressure or we have to be on edge because the Superintendent is coming!
Now I am hearing there is a strong possibility of strike!
I need to get a job on LI. I can't take this place much longer!
Let me know if you are in the same boat!

I hate NYC schools period. not a teacher but a parent and on every freakin committee they have, just so I can stay in the loop oif whats going on. My SIL is a teacher in a NYC school and I have several other family members who teach as well so I am very involved in the schools. I can feel your pain as a parent, believe me

I'm sorry you aren't happy!
I'm a NYC teacher and actually love it. I guess it depends where you are. I know in LI you will make more money, but I would think there is pressure in every district, LI included.

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))
Thanks....part of the problem is that its run by business men and not by educators! They wonder why no one wants to be a NYC teacher....let's see LOWER PAY, LOWER PAY with higher expectations, LOWER PAY!
I mean of course its more than the salary!
NYC schools need to be totally overhauled...but that will never happen

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))
I know there are pressures in every district and in every job for that matter but I don't like the way teachers in NYC are treated. And this is an especially bad year. Also there are so many bad things going on at my school this year...it makes going to work that much worse

I understand what you are saying. It's very frustrating, I'm sure.
Good luck in your job search, maybe you'll get something in LI for next year.

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))
I love the profession too...but hate NYC.Well we had a union meeting and our stupid union reps put the idea in our heads that there is a string possiblity of a strike...probably at the beginning of next school year before the election. They told us to start putting away money. So I start freaking out and I got really up. I told my FI about the meeting. My FI is a NYC teacher too and he was pissed that the Union reps are spreading this around and he thinks it is way to premature!
And I am an untenured teacher also....I just hope to God I am on LI next year!

i'm a city teacher and i totally understand what you are saying. i love my kids but i hate the lack of discipline. i love teaching but i hate with a passion the curiculum and the strictness and lucy calkins and the mayor and his business buddies who hate teachers and will do anything to sneak their distaste and make the job miserable! that is what i hate!!! i love the benefits (days off and health insurance and summers off and a fun job and the ability to make kids lives happy) but i hate the extra meetings and lack of structure that teachers must follow...the curriculum is so vague...basically, they are saying okay, make something...and teachers stand there wondering 'make what?' dinner? a garden? rules for a game? crafts? WHAT??? i too am untenured and i don't know what will happen in september. it sucks! but i am living with it now.

I work in a district and we are having major issues as well. Not to say that NYC has it easy.. I am truly empathetic... This year in my district, our contract expired and we are working without one. We also have an asst principal who came from the city and is trying to change our curriculum to fit the Lucy Calkins and balanced literacy mold.. Our day has become so regimented- its so frustrating.

NYC DOE sucks!!!!!!! I hate Lucy Calkins - I hate the reading/writing program!!! I'm sick of the hypocracy of people who say that we need to do what is right for the kids - but then stress you out about nonsense!!!!Sorry for venting - but that felt good!

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))
I teach on LI in a great district. But I must say this, each year that I teach gets harder. Their is less money each year, more student needs, more expectations and demands put on teachers and students (who may not be developmentally ready). It is so hard and frustrating...but I love my kids. They keep me going.

Re: Anyone else HATE their job??? (Any NYC teachers especially!))
I am listening to the what you are describing about the NYC schools and seriously we have the same issues and I am on LI. The BOE is comprised of business men and parents that know nothing about being teachers. They are telling us how to teach our disciplines and have no idea what it involves. They have changed it to the point where we have a calendar to tell us what we teach on what day. We are being pulled for 5 workshops, this does NOT include the staff developments after school, during the school year outrageous but all we hear is about more rigor more rigor. Then the next breathe-Why do we have so many kids failing?
It is ridiculous! I love my job but I am getting to the point where I don't come out of my classroom anymore because it is complete aggrasvasion every time I do!
As for the discipline we just had a classrooms ability to take the ELA's compromised because one student talked through out the whole listening part. The deans were called but they didn't do anything, WHY? because they hate this kid and don't want to be bother! He sprayed Windex in another child's face and he is still here! If you look at rate my teacher our dean is rated higher than most of the teachers, there is something wrong with that!
Lately it seems every time the dean actually suspends a child the principal will over turn it because the parents complain
Nice example!I don't doubt working in the city is tough, I don't think I could do it but LI is not a piece of cake either. Good luck
