Priest in Long Island that will perform offsite ceremony?

Hi Everyone - Does anyone know a priest that is willing to perform a ceremony outside of a church? My FH's family is very religious (Catholic) and they are ok with us getting married at our reception site, but they really want to ensure we're married by a Catholic priest. I don't know how to find a priest that is willing to do this. Any ideas or referrals? Thanks!!

P.S. I heard if you do this, you still have to get married in a church at some point in order for it to be recognized by the Catholic church. Is this true??

Re: Priest in Long Island that will perform offsite ceremony?

A Roman Catholic Priest that is in good standing will not perform ceremonies outside of the church. There are situations where a Priest may co-officiate at an inter-faith ceremony and it may occur somewhere other than the church, but the proper dispensations have to be obtained

For Catholics, marriage is not just a social or family event, but a church event. So the Church prefers that marriages between Catholics, or between Catholics and other Christians, be celebrated in the parish church of one of the spouses. Only the local bishop can permit a marriage to be celebrated in another suitable place (dispensation).

I am not sure if you are Catholic or just your FI - but don't assume that you will be able to convalidate your marriage if you get married by a JOP first. You need to contact your church immediately-especially if you want to be married this June. Most churches require at least 6 months preparation.

Try Catholicanswer.com

They have proests who will do it, but generally a marriage between 2 catholics MUST be in a church

Re: Priest in Long Island that will perform offsite ceremony?

Carlsbride is right--an officially recgonized priest who practices within the Catholic church, WILL NOT perform a ceremony outside the church. They are not allowed to do this. In order for your marriage to be recognized by a priest in a Catholic church, it must be performed within the walls of a church. The Catholicanswer.org website is for those Catholics that may not be as 'religious', and may have been raised Catholic, but wish not to be married in the church. The priests who perform those ceremonies, many times are no longer associated with the Church, but at one point where a member of a parish.

If you want to have a fully recognized Catholic ceremony, you must be married inside the church, not at your reception site.

HTH!

Try Fr. Tom Callahan. We are having him for our beach ceremony and he is wonderful.

Remember ladies, just because you dont get married in a church doesn't mean God isn't there watching over you!!!!!

Re: Priest in Long Island that will perform offsite ceremony?

I am getting married at my reception site. I am Catholic - my FH is Jewish. He is not comfortable getting married in my church so we are doing it on neutral ground - at our reception site. My priest who I've known since I'm a child is marrying us - we are getting the proper dispensation from the church - the bishop had to approve it. We are also going to look for a rabbi to co-officiate - we just haven't gotten around to it yet.

My priest made it very clear to me that 2 Catholics getting married can not get married outside the church and have it recognized by the church. He also told me in my case or any other interfaith ceremony where you are having a priest marry you and are getting the proper dispensations for it to be recognized by the church - the ceremony must be INDOORS. The church will not recognize the marriage if it takes place outdoors for some reason.
