And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

I always thought she was talented, had a nice style BUT now I truly have a new found respect for her. No one should wonder why women feel 'fat' in this country. Even a beautiful women like Kate Winslet isn't allowed to be herself. I guess the guys would NOT consider her beautiful without 6' perfect legs? That is at least what GQ is saying.

British GQ puts Kate Winslet on a digital diet, and she’s a little alarmed.

10 JANUARY 2003
A newly statuesque Kate Winslet towers on a pair of surprisingly slimline pins on the cover of next month's GQ magazine. The result of a pre-festive season crash diet? No, more like a little digital manipulation on the part of the magazine's art department.

The Titanic star, who has always made it clear that she doesn't believe a woman has to be slim to be attractive, has come under fire in some quarters for being involved in the project. According to her agent, however, although the actress had approved the original photos she was not consulted about the digital changes.

In fact the star confirmed her attitude in the interview accompanying the photos. 'What is sexy?' she says. 'All I know from the men I've ever spoken to is that they like girls to have an arse on them. So why is it that women think in order to be adored they have to be thin?'

Meanwhile, the magazine's editor, Dylan Jones, while admitting that the photos had been doctored, claims that Kate has actually lost a great deal of weight recently. 'These pictures are not a million miles away from what she really looks like,' he says. 'Kate is currently thinner than I have ever seen her, petite and sexy.'

Ms Winslet herself, however, doesn't seem to share his opinion. 'The retouching is excessive. I do not look like that and more importantly I don't desire to look like that,' she said. 'I actually have a Polaroid that the photographer gave me on the day of the shoot… I can tell you they've reduced the size of my legs by about a third. For my money it looks pretty good the way it was taken.'

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

I saw an interview with her re: that cover and she was really pi**ed off about it. Good for her to stand up for what the average woman looks like. It is more the norm to be her size in real life than what the cover depicts.

I can't agree more! She has told the truth though about those pics...they've been airbrushed.

That's just wrong! Kate Winslet is gorgeous just the way she is. Are we all supposed to look like that freak Lara Flynn Boyle?

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

I had seen that ad and her comments and I think I would have looked at that picture and known that they airbrushed her. I would love to be Kate Winslet's normal size! Unfortunately, this will never end that we must all be model thin and waif like. How sad...

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

ugh - Lara looks so sick My sister is naturally very thin, but you can tell she's not sick, it's just her body type - slender, not waif like.

It's amazing how the media can eventually change your perception with these types of things.

Perfect example: Jennifer Anniston in the early Friends days - she was always thin, but in the earlier days, she has more meat on her bones - now, she's noticably thinner. But when you see a repeat, I actually look at her and think for a second 'she was heavier back then!' How sad is that?! She was probably still 20 lbs thinner at that time then I'll ever be!!!!

I respect her for standing up about this misleading photo. I wonder how many celebrities would have said something.

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Debra Messing looked horrible in a recent episode of Will & Grace - her top revealed way too many of her bones, and she looked sick! Lara Flynn Boyle is also way too thin, and I have no idea what her publicist was thinking to let her out of her house wearing that sorry get-up!

Jennifer Aniston however, still looks healthy to me. I think the difference between her body now and her body during the early seasons of Friends is that she is more toned now than she ever was before. Granted, the scale is probably indicating she is lighter, but you'd be surprised how big a difference muscle tone can make, without losing much weight.

Good for Kate Winslet for saying openly that the picture was totally airbrushed over the top! I am so glad to hear that she wants to look like her normal, healthy self in magazines! Screw GQ!

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Claud, I agree with you 100%. Jennifer Ansiton is one of the few big stars who looks thin but healthy and in shape. Debra Messing and Lara Flynn Boyle, however, look like they are literally starving themselves. Real women who are naturally thin do not look like that. It is so not attractive and unhealthy!

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Demetra, I have to respectfully disagree with you...I didn't say that real women who are naturally thin don't look like Debra Messing and Lara Flynn Boyle. Some women do - despite having an otherwise healthy diet and exercise regimen.

One of my best friends is extremely thin (even after two children) and she appears very boney like Debra and Lara. The difference is, my friend makes better wardrobe choices, to down play her extreme slenderness and hide some of her bones.

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

JMO- but I think the fact that we trash girls for being too thin is just as bad. The fact is we all come in different shapes and sizes. Why can't all be beautiful? I think if someone doesn't have an eating disorder, then their shape should be accepted as is. It bothers me that they cannot just use a beautiful photo that Kate took. Honestly, what is wrong with our world now.

I would still rather have the too-thin problem than my hips and butt.

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

It's just as bad to say to someone you are too heavy as it is to say you are too thin! Why is that right no matter what??? I have a friend who is thin and gets comments said to her all the time about her weight (that she is too thin), why is that right yet appalling to say to someone hey, you are getting heavy! It is a double standard and Michele I agree with you, all women are beautiful and come in different shapes and sizes, let's all deal with it and not comment about it.

JMO!

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Yes, I agree - I don't mean to imply J Anniston has a weight problem - I think she still looks very healthy. One thing I've noticed with her is that you can see a difference in her face with the weight loss, from the earlier episodes.

Debra Messing is a stick!!! Her collarbone sticks out wayyyy too much lately

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Let me say this from living it. I am too thin & I try to gain, I always did, my metabolism is very high. It IS VERY wrong when people tell someone they are too thin OR too big..EVERY woman is beautiful in some way.

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Jenn - I agree - my father was a very slender man and grew up being tormented because he wasn't as athlete or strong like the others around him. He ate SO much and worked out all the time trying to gain muscle, but he just couldn't.

I think it's very easy to get caught up in the moment and give opinions on things we're not necessarily aware of...or jump to conclusions because we think we might know the situation...

I regret my 'too skinny' comment! Sorry if I offended anyone

No one offended me Just saying it does hurt both thin & heavy people and it hurts sometimes to hear comments that people don't use their mind on..asking how much do you weigh etc.
We are all gorgeous

You didn't offend me Teri at all...I meant also as a society that we shouldn't comment on the weight of people whether they are too thin or heavy, not neccesarily only us here in LIW.

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

Sorry if I offended anyone with my too-thin comment, but IMHO these Hollywood stars take it too far. I know a few women who are 'too thin' but none of them look as bad as LFB or Debra Messing - their clothes literally hang on them. Maybe it is because of wardrobe choices as someone mentioned earlier. It's just that you see these women when they start out and they look great, but then once they start getting more popular, they lose half their body weight. I don't get it!

Re: And we wonder why we all have poor body images?

If you are thin you are thin. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. As much as I might not like to see extremly thin women, (Kate Moss/Alley Mcbeal) I have always looked at my mother and admired her butt and hips and always wanted curves.

I just think the people that go above and beyond to get thin is crazy. Maybe the images that they look up to are the wrong ones, they are looking at.

Calista Flockheart and Kate Moss might be naturally skinny girls that is not where I aim to be but there are people who do. I have always been raised in a culture to love my curves, the little I have. I think its up to the parents to instill self confidence and self esteem in their children and not have them look to Hollywood/TV/Movies as who they should model themselves after.

Love the body you have its the only one you are going to get.
