Changing your name with Social Security??

Figured you girls could help me out!

I wanted to try and change my name this Friday, but am trying to maximize my time.

If I go in person to Social Security, will they provide me with a new card right away?

I was under the assumption that you need your new Social Security card in order to change your drivers license..is that true?

Essentially, I wanted to determine if I can go to Social Security and the DMV on the same day....any help you girls can provide would be appreciated!!

Actually they will give you a letter stating that you have changed your SS and your card will come within 2 weeks. It will state all your new info on the card and the date that the change occured.

The you take that letter with your current license and marriage license to the DMV and fillout the forms and they will change your license and give you a temporary paper license to carry until your new one comes in the mail (you will also need to carry your old license with you as well). Be aware that they do make you take your license picture over again and there is a $10 fee only for the DMV though. SS does not charge to change your last name.

I just did mine this past Friday and that is what I had to do. Hope this helps.

I went to DMV before SS and all I needed was my marriage license to prove i Changed my name. SS needed my new license with my new name because they needed a photo id with my new name

i went to DMV with just my marriage license which was sufficient. when i went to SS eventually i needed my marriage license and my SS card with my maiden name
