Crazy story....

I work for a home health agency. One of our marketers (who is also a nurse) was working in a senior building on Chicago's south side (sooo bad there) doing blood pressure screenings. She was with 3 of our other marketers. Then, gun shots rang out and they all looked out the window. Right in front of this building there was a 'gang war'. A 17 year old boy was shot in front of her eyes (2x in the back, 1 went through his back and into his heart). My coworker RAN out there to help this boy. There was still shooting going on further down the block She ran out there to try treat, comfort and revive him. She even performed CPR on him. He eventually died in her arms. She is very distraught over this today (I dont blame her at all, I'm sure we all would be).

But..I was thinking..if that were me..I think I would have stayed inside where it was safe. I wonder if that makes me selfish? No one she was with went outside. They were all hiding.

She has way more balls that I ever could have.

Just wanted to share!

Re: Crazy story....

Don't beat yourself up over it...

I think it takes a very brave person to do what they did... they are LUCKY though that nothing happened.

YOU JUST NEVER KNOW. Innocent bystanders and good samaritans get hurt ALL THE TIME.

So while I don't mean that this person is stupid -- it almost takes stupid action to get people to do that sometimes.

Either way -- the big man I'm sure is thinking highly of them. Lots of good karma coming their way.

Re: Crazy story....

Wow, that was an extraordinary act of bravery.

I think most wouldn't be able to do something like that. Maybe if it was for a family member or friend, but even then, it's so hard to say what a person would do you know?

I don't think you're selfish at all. I think you are perfectly normal!

Re: Crazy story....

I don't think it is selfish at all.

It takes a very special kind of person to just spring into action like that. I'm sure she didn't even really think it through, she just reacted.

Look at firefighters. They run into burning buildings when it is most people's first reaction to run out!!!!

Thank god for these people, and don't be down on yourself.

Re: Crazy story....

I'm so sorry your friend had to go through that and I'm just amazed at how brave she was. Personally, I don't think I would've ran out there either. I don't think that thought would've even crossed my mind. But everyone reacts to situations like this differently- and who knows, maybe you would've ran out there. I wouldn't think any less of someone who didn't though!

Re: Crazy story....

I don't think you are selfish at all! If she is a nurse, maybe she didn't even think to go outside, maybe it just happened. You don't know how you are going to react until you are put into a situation.

I commend her on her bravery and hope that she can get through this tough time.
