In my work setting, I've begun many an e-mail to my boss with Hey and then went back and changed it because I thought better of it. But I work in a corporate law firm who thinks they are more hoity toity than they actually are. In your case, that's ridiculous. And even if it was unprofessional, the way she 'reprimanded you like a child' is even more so!

ETA: Unfortunately I see a lot of people like this in management positions and I just sit back and WONDER how they got there. They are clearly not management material.

I would totally understand her perspective if it was your situation, being in a truly professional setting .BUT the ONLY difference between her and a regular teacher is she takes care of bus issues and lunch duty coverage. Like really lady, ughhhh

I don't think you're wrong at all, I write 'hey' or 'hi' in short e-mails all the time!

She needs to get the 'stick' out of her behind. When you say principal's aide...is she like an assistant principal or secretary?

She is a classroom teacher with title of principal's aide. So assistant principal. But she literally only takes car of bus and lunch issues. Thats. It. No say in anything having to do w staff. Which is why I was so mad, especially since I address my principal casually. But I agree she needs to get the stick out! lol

I wouldn't have done that but the culture of my district is to to be very, very formal when you are untenured. My principal still has to remind me to call him by his first name.

She's nuts!! I mean for a one sentence e-mail thats fine! Its not meant to be formal, If it was a serious email then hey wouldnt be appropriate. She needs to get over herself and pull that stick out.

i think she think a little too highly of herself. the nexxt time you write her an email at all don't evenstart it with anything! lets see if she has something to say about that!

She's rude!! I actually start off emails to my principal with 'Hi Mr. ----'. Dear just always seems so incredibly formal for the principal I have now. He always says to shoot him a quick email with any questions. He's just different than my last one. Considering who this woman is, she needs to get off her high horse!

I don't start off professional emails with 'hey' but thats just me. It does sound like she overreacted. As long as she has no say in your tenure, I wouldn't think any of it. Until you're tenured though I'd try be a bit of an @ss kisser just in case. It's all part of the game (unfortunately). If you have a teaching job do anything you can do to secure it!!
