DH and motorcycle obsession...

I am against him getting one but since I cant tell him what he can and cant do, I can only voice my concerns... Well, now he wants me to wait for him today to go to the DMV so he can go take the motorcycle test... I am not happy in the least bit... Not only do I think hes going to kill himself, but now is not the time to be buying a motorcycle... We just have other stuff to pay off first before he goes off buying a toy...

Any of you girls have a DH who has his heart set on this? Or even any of you that went through this already who can offer up some advice/comfort for me?

I feel like Im going to rip my hair out between this and my passionate hate for Rooms Unlimited...

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

Dh has 3. Two of which aren't running. This is something he did before we dated but bought the bikes after. I decided I could not fight him on this cause I took him knowing about this 'hobby'. I do however give him rules. He nevrr can leave for a ride without giving me several kisses before he leaves, if I'm not home he has to call and tell me he is going and then call me at the destination and then when he is returning home.

He has so far been in 2 accidents and hurt only once.

I am now at he point where I am going to take lessons and buy my own bike.......if you can't beat them join them.

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

DH had a motorcycle. He bought it when we were dating. And I was mad but like you said I couldn't tell him what to do. So with that being said. I got him the best DOT approved helmet I could. I told him that he could buy the loudest mufflers possible (it helps driver hear them thus keeping them safer) and I ask that he try to limit his riding in unsafe circumstances (rain/darkness/weaving in and out of traffic).

I was happy that DH wanted a Harley cause at least it wasn't a speed bike.

I think as his DW you have the right to tell him how you feel and that you want him to be safe. And he can take it from there. However, it is not worth the fight cause they are gonna do it either way.

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

DH has one and is trying to sell it. Its nice to go out on it and all but, enough now we need to buy a house. so he is selling it and its a start for him to grow up
In all honesty if it is the one thing for him to do then I say hey but, with us financially that is the big reason why he is selling it.

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

MY DH has had a Harley since before we met. He knows how I feel about it-

Funny, when we were in pre-cana one of our speakers spoke about his love of motorcycles and how his wife was so against it...but him giving it up was making him lose something that brings him happiness. And how they reached an understanding, and she ended up riding with him and how it turned out to be something they enjoyed together.

Since then I sort of take a step aside with the situation. I just always remind him to be safe and how much he means to me and to remember that.

Plus I figure the more I stray him away from it the more he's going to want to do it. SO if I support it, somehow it's not as enticing. LOL.

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

DH wanted one for such a long time, but I work at a Rehab Hospital and the people with the worst injuries usually were in motorcycle accidents. I have told him so many times about the things I've seen that I think I finally got him to stop thinking he'll get one. He still wants one, but I told him I'd never allow it.

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

Im sorry, but I am not a fan, esp since the school nurse's husband in the school I last worked in watched the movie The Bucket List & thought it was such a 'great idea' to get a motorcycle - she was adamant about him not getting it but he went anyway - he was still in the parking lot after JUST buying the bike when someone pulled in front of him & he lost control of the bike & flipped... had massive head trauma...died in his wife's arms in the parking lot & left behind 3 children to boot...

and my DH being a State Trooper says he scrapes these guys off the pavement all the time...

there's just so little protection on a bike vs a car...

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

My ex-boyfriend bought one without caring what I thought. I told him it was either me or the bike.

Well, I didn't marry him so you can figure out what he chose (along with other bad decisions in life).

Re: DH and motorcycle obsession...

My DH wants one but there is no way he is getting one especially living on Long Island. Maybe if we lived somewhere in the country it would be different but there is way to much traffic here! But if your DH does get one all you can do is just that hes kept safe!

I just laughed because I was like wow my pre-cana did the same story but then I remembered we were in the same one.

My theory on any dangerous hobbies is that if he did it before you then you really have no say cause you take them knowing this is something they like to do. If it is a new hobby then sit down and discuss the options.

DH rides his motorcycle, I have plenty of dangerous hobbies so we just tell each other to be as careful as possible and trust they will be.
