Did anyone make the switch working...
From working on the island to working in the city? If so why? And do you regret it?

Re: Did anyone make the switch working...
I did. Although I'm not working right now, because I'm in law school.I lived in Valley Stream, used to work in Garden City (15-20 minz away). I found a better job in NYC so decided to go there, Although the office was nicer, it was the city! (I <3 the city) and the pay was more. I had to wake up almost 2 hours earlier for the commute via train. The extra money was going towards metro card, LIRR, lunch. And i was coming home much later than 5:30. So it wasnt worth it. I left.
But After i become an attorney hopefully! I wouldnt mind working in the city especially since that will be my 'career' rather than just a job...

Re: Did anyone make the switch working...
I did a couple of times. I went from working on the island to the city to the island and then to the city (now I work on an island in the city - Randall's Island - lol).I MUCH MORE perfer the city. I lived in FP (as you know) so I would drive to the F train at 179th and Hillside and take the subway. It wasn't all too bad and was much cheaper then taking the train and then to the subway. There is more to do in the city. I could go out, meet up with people, shop on lunch, and everything was walking distance to get food. I found it actually to be cheaper for me to work in the city (less gas usage) then working on the island and I miss it every day!
Hope this helped.

I didn't, but DH did. He likes his job, but he hates the city. He's never been a city guy anyway, but the extra commute and traveling costs really make him hate it more. He used to work about 15 minutes from home. Now it takes him over an hour each way.

Re: Did anyone make the switch working...
I did - worked in Syosset (living in Smithtown) then did the switch to the city. I like it...I sleep on the train on the way in (and sometimes out) I dont have to wait in traffic for hours. I like that aspect. The only thing I hate is that the LIRR blows big balls so its always broken. I also hate how crowded it is.
Now living in Long Beach the commute isnt nearly as bad and I dont mind it as much. I still say I hate the city, but I definitely think I would rather be in the city than driving to work each day. PLUSSS the LIRR serves booze on the platform so if you have a bad day, you can have a beer on the train
