Dress Bussel

Hi Ladies. A friend of mine that works at Amisale (sp) Bridal in the city. She is making my headpiece and came over yesterday to see my dress. She works with brides a lot (she is also a bridal attendant at a temple on the weekends). Anyway she was talking about the bussel. My dress is organza (outter layer) and she said I will need a french bussel b/c the organza is very delicate and it is stonger. She said a regular bussel probably won't last an hour with dancing, moving etc.

Question...Did anyone have a french bussel and if so do you have a pciture of it?...and....Did anyone have a problem with the regular bussel not holding?
I'm afraid it would break and I would have to hold my dress the whole night (the train is pretty heavy).

She said it's up to me how I want it but to be careful......Please help

Thanks

Re: Dress Bussel

Betty, my dress was organza & had work on the bottom. The seamstress at the bridal shop did a regular bustle for me & it held fine. And I danced ALL NIGHT!

I don't think I have any good shots from the back, tho. I'll look!

Re: Dress Bussel

This isn't the greatest pic of a french bussle, but I had posted this a long time ago...it's the only one I have:

Re: Dress Bussel

I am not good at materials and official names for things but I can tell you my experience.

My seamstress had a difficult time finding the right bustle for my dress. I had to get two bustles. My dress had this sheer, delicate overlay with lots of detail and very heavy. I had this bustled separately than the inner piece. The inner piece stayed fine. The sheer piece had this tiny little piece that hung on the floor and everyone stepped on all night (it was so tiny but everyone's feet found it). Since the material was so delicate, it was tore easily and the buttons kept popping off. It was the worst part of the night because I kept having it sewn on. I was getting so fustrated with it. Part of the reason was the delicate nature of the dress and the weight of the dress (I had a foot added to the train).

Talk to your seamstress and make sure that the bustle is secure. I think mine could have done a better job.

Here's a picture..not sure what the 'official' name of this bustle is. This was from my first fitting...Looked better when it was done.

Re: Dress Bussel

I had a french bustle and I think it is so pretty and elegant compared to the regular bustle...here's a good pic of my bustle. It withstood most of the night until I felt the need to jump up and down to Madonna's Ray of Light and then a couple of pieces feel..but that was my fault, not the bustles!

Re: Dress Bussel

both pictures are EXACTLY what she was telling me to do..that is the French!! It looks nicer than I thought. It was hard for me to see it on my dress b/c she was holding it and it was falling down. I was afraid it was too old fashioned but both of yours look so nice.

I bought the dress at Davids and was going to have it done there but now I'm scared . If I get it done elsewhere will them press it too or will I have to do that seperately??

Thanks so much

Re: Dress Bussel

If you have your alterations done separately they person who does your alterations will press it for you. I had to ship my dress from Dallas after alterations to NY for the wedding and a nice woman at a bridal boutique in Merrick offered to press mine for free! I needed her to fix my veil and she offered to do my dress also. So don't worry about pressing it...there are plenty of options for that.

Re: Dress Bussel

Betty,
I agree with her!!! My gown was organza & my bustle broke within 15 seconds(no joke) I had 3 safety pins popping open all day. My dress store was the WORST therefore I didn't know. I love the french bustle look & wish I would have done it.

Re: Dress Bussel

Don't do the bustle at Davids, and don't let them alter your dress, if you don't want any unpleasant surprises. I am using Karin Yngvesdotter as my seamstress, she is in Astoria, and she'll be able to help you out.

Re: Dress Bussel

I think with your dress (the beading work) the french bustle will be great. I had the french bustle and I absolutely loved it. I was free to dance and it looked great. The only thing is that my maitre'd french bustled it because I forgot to show my mom. I still love it though.

Re: Dress Bussel

I did had a bussel in my dress but it was not a French style like these pics. It was just a regular bussel with a bow shape. My seamstress put hooks on my gowns hidden so well that it was impossible to find the stupid hooks! The photographer was trying to do formal portaits with both families that he said not to mind the bussel. I'd got a pictures from our disposable cameras with our families looking for the hooks! Very funny photo too!
