gift! help!

I am in law school and got invited by a class mate whom I know, but by no means are we good or great friends. He did not invite a lot of people from class...but lo and behold invited me and my husband. I met his fiance a few times too at get togethers...

They are having an engagment party at a house not sure if its theresm in October at 3pm, so not even sure if thats dinner or lunch party...

Anyways i have no clue what to give if me and DH go. I will see this guy everyday for the next 2 years so I dont want to give something too small, yet I am on a budget. They are not registered anywhere. He is Jewish (only adding that info in in case they have a customary amt) I know with Bat/Bar Mitzvahs ppl tend to give a lot...not sure if this matters...

Please help me determine an amt....come to think of it ive never really been to an engagement party so i dont know! its always weddings, showers, etc

should i give $ or can i give a home gift card like macys, bed bath etc

Re: gift! help!

I've never been to an engagement party, but it sounds like you could just bring something small but nice over and give them that. Like a serving plate or something from Bed Bath & Beyond or Pier One that's like $25-$30. It's a thoughtful, useful gift but hopefully won't break your budget. I would not bring cash.

These are $30 from Pier 1 -- they're really pretty and I actually thought about getting someone one as a wedding present before:

I completely understand what you're saying about not wanting to do the wrong thing since you have two more years to spend with these people (law school is awful enough as it is) so something thoughtful but not too pricey is a good balance. You could also just bring over a bottle of wine to their party.

It does not sound like they're going to be serving a meal -- 3 pm sounds like appetizers, if that.

Re: gift! help!

What about a mezzuzah??? In the jewish tradition we put them on the doors of every house. One of my friends got me one from BBB. Zion Lion is a jewish store in the Huntington area that also has many.

I'm still sticking with Champagne or wine.
