Has Anyone Tried Negotiating Rent (when moving somewhere new)

I haven't posted on here in a while (although I still lurk every now and then - LOL). My husband and I are in the process of looking for a new apartment and I was just curious if any of you ladies have tried negotiating rent with a potential new landlord? I hate negotiating but I also hate overpaying LOL. I dont want the landlord to think I can't afford the rent, but I also think in these economic times mostly everything is negotiable.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ladies

Re: Has Anyone Tried Negotiating Rent (when moving somewhere new)

A lot of landlords usually advertise the rent as slightly higher in case of negotiating. Nothing crazy, usually just $50-$100.

I'd say most are ready for negotiations. Don't feel weird about asking.

We did when we moved in and she came down $100. It can't hurt to try.

Re: Has Anyone Tried Negotiating Rent (when moving somewhere new)

Yes, it's definitely possible...

When DH and I moved into our apartment, we offered them $150 less than what they were asking for it, they countered with $100 less than the orginial price and there, we had a deal.

It also helped that we have friends who live in the apartment building and we know how much they were paying and they had a brand new kitchen, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, dishwasher, etc... the leasing company was trying to get us to pay more than they were (eta: our apt had an older kitchen, no dishwasher)!!

But even if you don't know what other people's rents are, you should offer less and see what they come back with.

Yes... also take into consideration things you might be able to utilize to bring the rent down.

Are you willing to shovel snow? Cut the grass? etc.

Re: Has Anyone Tried Negotiating Rent (when moving somewhere new)

We negotiated like $100 off the montly rent and the $$ we had to put down (i.e., we did first & security instead of first, last & security).

Can't hurt to ask!
