Homeowners - Is there anything in your house that you cant figure out how to work?

Have you found any mystery items or anything that you just cant figure out how to work in your new home?

We cant turn the sprinklers on - I think they are turned off from the main source and we cant find the valve.

We have this huge entire house water filter system that has a reading that says 'needs maintenance' but we have no idea who makes the system or who installed it.

Co Op life was so much simpler...

I have a few switches that I can not figure out what they go to. Every so often I make hubby sit in every room as I switch them on and off. I vow that one day I will learn what they are for!

I have a light switch and we can't figure out what it turns on. We changed all the switches in the living room last year and changed that one too - even though we have no idea what it does.

Maybe it turns on your sprinklers.....

Our sprinkler main was in the garage.

We have lights going up the driveway we could not figure out how to put on. We tried every switch we could find. I called the previous owners. It is set on a timer, so now I can finally turn them on..lol

Really really long

This is a great thread--listen to what I couldn't figure out-- when we moved into our house DH remembered all the vcarious swithces--the current homeowners must have gone over it all with us but of course I didn't pay attention--so when we move in we played with all the switches and there was ONE in the hallway of the basement stairs that we couldnt figure out-- was driving us crazy--so about 2 weeks after we moved in (so mid Dec) I am doing laundry and I come up from the basement and turn off all the lights and think to myself --I am going to shut off the switch cause maybe it is affecting our electric bill or somethin so I shut it off-- so 1/2 hour later we go to bed and i am getting cold so I ask DH did you lower the heat(again new homeowners not wanting to have huge bills) so he goes and checks--the heat isnt working--so he resets it and still nothing so after an hour of him trying to figure it all out-- we have to call the service guy--so now keep in mind it is Sunday night almost midnight and again I am thinking **** this is going to cost big time!!!!!
to make a really long story short-- i had shut off the power to the furnance-- you know the switch that usually has the ugly red faceplate saying DO NOT TURN OFF!!!!! but of course ours didn't!!!
So the moral of the story----be cautious about those things you cant figure out and enjoy the minute when you figure out what they are!!!

Re: Really really long

We have this very random battery looking thing stuck on the wall of our spare bedroom and is plugged into the outlet. We have no idea what it is for. I keep forgetting to look up the manufacturer online to see what items they produce. Some have suggested it is some kind of small back up generator battery since the woman worked out of her home and may have used something like it for computer backup. Others think it could have something to do with emitting an electronic field around the house to keep bugs away? What the? Still trying to figure that one out. Also figured out that the woman that lived there didn't clean very well!

Re: Really really long

We are only in like three weeks so I guess in time we will learn but there is so much we have no clue how to work.

There are switches all over the place we don't touch because we don't know what the do.

Our lights we are still getting use to. Our high hats in the master are connected in some crazy way to our backyard light and we have no clue the exact way they work yet. As well as the hall switch and all the outlets in the living room.

We also had sprinkler system issues - we could not figure out how to get it to work on a timer in the front yard. (wound up called someone in and it is broken - at least it wasn't us!).

I am sure there are more - but that is it so far

Cute thread!

Re: Really really long

During the winter, we could not figure out why our boiler would not go on. We paid someone $100 to tell us that we needed to put water in it.

Re: Really really long

OMG...don't even get me started!

From switches, to wires, to PVC pipes sticking out of the ground!!! We're figuring it out as we go. So far, no damage.

We still haven't figured out how to make the 2nd zone (our lower level) heating system work without it being 100 degrees...
