House Opinion - Thoughts?

You find a house that has everything you want - number of rooms, bathrooms, great space, garage, yard, neighborhood, new kitchen.... everything you're looking for.... The only thing is that the backyard 'backs' the town's high school - specifically where the buses park at the end of the night. There is an 8 ft. stockade fence for privacy, but at the end of the day, you know what's back there.

Would you keep looking or go for the home?

ITA!!! Its so hard to find everything you want...
There is a fence... you'll 'forget' about what is behind it eventually..

(i grew up backed up against the LIRR... after a while, you just don't hear it, ya know??)

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

i don't think i'd want to live by a school, to be honest ...

i just think of the King of Queens episode where they show their first house together across the street from a school and it's very noisy and lots of cars & buses on the street and they hate it.

BUT if the price is right, i might get it anyhow

that's what concerns me a little bit... the noise from the buses. since the house backs to the yard, it doesn't seem like school traffic goes through the block because of where the front of the school and the fields are compared to where the house is, but still something to consider. it's reallyyyyy super cute and such a nice neighborhood. like i could totally seeing riding bikes with my kids and going for runs in this area.

still mulling it over - and bringing DH to see it tonight (haha yes, i went with the realtor while he was out of town this week!)

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

Best advice I can offer is to go with your gut...

And keep in mind resale. If you're this conflicted, someone who may want to buy this home when you sell it may have the same concerns.

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

def weigh out the pros and cons...I can say 2 pros is that beig that close to a school will be great for when you have children. AND you will never have a sex offender in your neighborhood :)

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

Crashing - we're looking at houses too and we have found 2 that we both love, but have 'location' issues (one has a huge power pole just behind the back yard and the other has a lot of noise from a main road, even though you can't see the road), so we are going to keep looking.Think about the fumes and noise from the buses as they start up every morning and come back at night. Is that something you want to deal with? And re-sale is definitely something you want to keep in mind. Can you go by the house in the morning when the buses are leaving or when they return at the end of the day, to see what its like?

ETA: You can always change the decor, kitchen, etc., but you can never change the location

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

I say go for it. DH and I looked long and hard for 'the house' in a particular neighborhood. The one we ended up wanting - perfect layout, number of rooms, huge yard, convenient location etc happened to be on an avenue. not a super busy ave but I had really wanted to avoid being on one. The front yard is deep enough though that we don't feel like we're on the road. I think the privacy fence is good enough as well.

And a school is definitely not the worst thing you could live adjacent to I live a few blocks away from the elementary school and like a PP said, at least no sexual predator can live in the proximity

I may need to stalk them out really early one morning to see for myself. this is a good idea. first step is taking DH to see it in person, because he might just put the kabosh on it right then and there. such a shame because it is a great house.

darn location issues!!

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

I dont think this is the worst thing in the world

the house we live in now, the backyard backs up to a major shopping center, we have not had any problems at all with noise and we have a fence and trees lining the backyard, it doesn't bother me at all knowing theres a parking lot back there

I actually love that we are soooo close to major stores. I dont think backing up to where buses park is going to create a problem for you, being so close to the school is a great thing

Why dont you drive by the house at all different times of day, really early in the morning when the buses start up, and when school gets out and see what its like

But it is really hard to find everything you want, so I would prob go for it

Re: House Opinion - Thoughts?

This is a tough one - but think about it; you may only have windows open when the weather is warmer, which is the mostly when the buses aren't in use.

...plus you get to spy on your kid when he goes to high school. (not that that's important, that's just sick humor on my part..lol).

but if the house had everything you wanted and that was your only iffy thing, i'd say go for it.
