Is anyone not saving for a house?

DH and I definitely want to buy a house someday, but for the immediate future, we're not exactly buckling down too much...

We have a nice little cushion in our savings and we slowly add to it every month, but let me count the ways we are NOT saving for a house:

1. Our recent trip to Hawaii
2. Our upcoming mini getaway to Orlando in June
3. Our 1 year anniversary trip to Italy in September
4. Our trip to Miami for a 1/2 marathon in December

Maybe we're afraid of never getting to take a vacation again after we have a mortgage and kids!

Are we alone or is there anyone else who is not taking the traditional post-marriage route?

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

We haven't really been saving for a house. We have money in our savings that we don't use but we haven't been putting more away. After my Italy trip in July then we're going to start saving for a house where we will live off his check and put mine directly into savings.

I wish it could be sooner but I agreed to this Italy trip and I can't turn back.

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

We aren't. Actively anyways.

I am basically putting all of my paychecks towards paying off debts and we pay our bills with DH's.

But our CC's are almost paid off so when that happens my $$ will go into savings.

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

nope we arent. i cannot fathom having to pay double towards a mortgage plus all the extras. right now our rent is super cheap and everythings included.

im not getting any younger, so i definitely will not do the house, baby route.

plus i definitely agree with you- i dont think we will ever take a vacation once homeowners. so depressing

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

We're saving a good amount of money, but we don't necessarily want to buy a house.

At the moment, we're living in a house that DH owns with his parents. They don't live there though. (Praise the Lord! ) We have tenants though - two sets of them. We pay the mortgage, coupled with the rent from the tenants.

The plan is that his dad wants to sell the home in a couple of years.

If the only way for us to afford a home on our own is to have tenants, then we will NOT be buying a home. It's too hard to find good tenants. As of now, we are telling our downstairs tenants that they need to leave because of the issues we've had with them.

We honestly would not mind renting in a building, but then we'd have to give up a yard. Our yard is small, but it's our's.

There's pros and cons to both sides. So for now, we're saving 'just because'.

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

this girl.

we have too many expenses to save right now... and by expenses, I mean we want to go away a lot.

We're both perfectly alright with renting in our current apartment for a while.

When Shaun gets a job we can start saving

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

We are putting money away in savings, but not necessarily for a house. We do, however, look at houses a couple of times a month to make sure we are educated on the market (so that we know what we're talking about when we are ready one day).

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

it's relieving to know that some of you are in my boat! Some by choice, some not so much, but still... I feel like I'm constantly justifying our life and truth be told, we're pretty happy where we are for now, so why rush things (and lose our quality of life) for the sake of 'keeping up the the appropriate timeline'?

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

we are also saving a bit for just because reasons. be it vacation, future apartment buying or anything else that comes up (sometimes we use the savings to pay for completely unplanned issues)
just b/c we're married doesnt mean we have to start immediately looking to buy apartment/house. plus we just moved to a very nice apt (water view!!! ) and I am very happy to stay there the next 2 yrs and rent.

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

DH and I go on about 3-4 trips a year... last year other than our mini-moon cruise to the Carribean and our HM to Thailand we also went to Ireland and I went to DIsney with my sister and he went to Vegas with his brother... we already own a house but our spending/saving habits didn't really change any after we did buy. You'll find what works for you so I wouldn;t worry about it too much. I say save the way you are, enjoy your traveling and you'll be able to work it out when you are ready to buy.

Re: Is anyone not saving for a house?

were not, we already have our house, we bought it a year after we got engaged so we would have it before the wedding. I can definitely say that I'm happy we did it that way
