is now a good time to get a house?

looking at properties in Massapequa, Deer Park and huntington, and realizing that the mortgage on some of these is 500 less a month than my rent...

Kinda sad huh

Re: is now a good time to get a house?

There are homes in huntington and huntington station for under 200, When I moved here from FL everything was 400+ no matter where you are.

I am just trying to figure out which would be better, stay in apartments, or see if we can get the funding for a house

Re: is now a good time to get a house?

We are currently looking and I am terrible with numbers but FH is obsessive about them and according to him and our REA the interest rates are great right now which is why he wants to buy now. I don't fully understand alot of this stuff but I know that the homes we have been looking at are a lot lower than I would have thought.

Re: is now a good time to get a house?

Now is a great time to buy a house IF you can get a mortgage...its a buyers market but banks are not really willing to give out mortgages lately.

We are looking casually for a place...waiting for the right one to appear. We aren't in a rush to move but throwing away $1500/month isn't my favorite thing in the world either.

Re: is now a good time to get a house?

interest rates are great right now and in some areas you can get a great deal. if its reasonable compared to your rent i would def look into it. but keep in mind payments per month will also include town taxes and some homeowner insurance. its all lumped into one payment but it adds up. if you look online it just tells you the amount towards the mortgage, not taxes and stuff.

be careful in huntington station. not a great area right now. i'm looking in that area too and houses are great prices, but for a reason. not great condition and bad stuff happening. they just installed surveillance and upped the amount of cops.

ETA: my aunt lives in massapequa and its a beautiful area!

Re: is now a good time to get a house?

I saw a listing in Deer Park that looks gorgeous, but we have our lease until April, and while I want to try and get a house, I am not sure if we really should look into it right now

I hate being in an apartment, and if DH gets the job he is interviewing for, we will make to much for the program we are in at the complex, and it goes to 2200 a month :(
