JILLIAN! and anyone else who has been/is going to Ireland/Scotland

I know you were just in Ireland recently, DH and I are planning our belated HM to Ireland and Scotland for August. What are your must see/must do things in Ireland? We are thinking 5 days in Ireland and 4 days in Scotland, is that enough time to do lots of things in Ireland?

And has anyone been to Scotland? My knowledge of all things Scottish come from Braveheart so any recommendations are welcome!

That's awesome!!! You're going to looooove it!!! And August is the best time to go. Where in Ireland are you going? We mainly stayed with family in Limerick and Mayo so we were more in the country than the tourist-y areas. I actually had responded to someone's post on LIF's travel board about Ireland so I'm going to copy and paste that bad boy in here because I'm super lazy! Definitely ask around over there for Scotland- everyone on that board is very helpful!!!

The one thing we did that I loved was climbed Croagh Patrick. It was really difficult but what an amazing feeling when you know you've done it. It's supposed to be a religious experience as this is where St. Patrick supposedly fasted for 40 days or something like that. There is a church on top of the mountain. It's a 3.5 mile hike each way and the last 1/2 mile is BRUTAL. But it was so worth it to do.

We also climbed Loch Gur, which we had done before Croagh Patrick. Croagh Patrick made it look like a speed bump. But it was still beautiful.

We also visited the town of Knock which is where my ILs got married. It's a small and very religious town.

We also visited the Cliffs of Moher which are beautiful. It is definitely worth the trip, but the museum there stinks.

And lastly, we visited Bunratty Castle. We didn't get to do much there though since we got there a little late after spending all day at Cliffs of Moher. Expect to be at Bunratty all day. We also had a drink at Durty Nelly's but wound up not having dinner there.

ETA: My absolute favorite part of the whole trip was Croagh Patrick though. I've never been so proud of myself! I'll never do it again though! LOL!

Well we don't have any itinerary yet at all, so all suggestions are very welcome! I'm guessing we will definitely want to do Dublin, but then we are going to rent a car and drive around to places, I just have no idea whats worth it! I would definitely like to see those Cliffs and that hike sounds right up our alley! Thanks for the suggestions!

I'd definitely check out Dublin. We really wanted to drive down there for a weekend and come back, but it just wasn't feasible. Our schedules were packed enough as it was since we attended a wedding, a family reunion, and a birthday while we were there! lol! I just wanted to say about the car rental- it's expensive, especially if you need to get an automatic like we did. And driving is bananas over there. I don't know if you've ever been but it's more than just having the driver's side on the left and driving on the left side of the road. There's roundabouts everywhere and the roads are VERY narrow. Frighteningly narrow. There are some roads that claim to be two way that look like a walking path! lol! My ILs used to live in Ireland though, so my FIL was okay with driving. Just a heads up!

Re: JILLIAN! and anyone else who has been/is going to Ireland/Scotland

We went there for a week and did a mini road trip and loved it!! We flew into Dublin and then drove to Killarney. We say the castle and the town is really cute, then we drove to Cashel to see the Rock of Cashel which is truly amazing. We stayed in an adorable b&b at the foot of the rock with views of it. The town is really small and we thought we would be bored until we walked into a random local pub and we were the only tourists there. Everyone in the pub starting talking to us and buying us drinks, by the end of the night we were wasted and singing Irish songs with the entire pub in sing a longs. The next day we drove to Galway and it was one of my favorite cities. We saw traditional live Irish music at a bunch of pubs and had great food. We then did the three hour drive from Galway to Dublin and spent 4 days and New Years Eve in Dublin. There's a ton to see in Galway and Dublin, we used TripAdvisor to plan the entire trip. Here's our itinerary: Our Itinerary

You'll have an amazing time, we loved our trip. Just be careful if you're renting a car and driving, the roads are extremely narrow and curvy, don't drive at night because there are no streetlights. Make sure you have a GPS because there are no street signs at all! FM me if you want more info!!
