Re: Looking for some advice... long...

i dont think 2 years is a long time to wait, being the same age as you. i plan on waiting to start trying next summer, at 31. so i will be 32 when the kid's born. and maybe 35 or so when the 2nd is born. etc.

one question is: how many kids to you want to have? if its like 2 or 3, you can afford to wait. But if u want like 4-5 kids u better start pronto! kwim?

eta if u plan it right, you can also HAVE the kid right as the position ends. get preggers while youre working there.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Just try to conceive at the tail end.

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

I think it really depends on your career goals. As am attorney I know what an amazing opportunity it is but if you want to be a SAHM I probably wouldn't take the position....if You want to be a judge or it will further your career path then take the job

I think you really just need to think about your career goals.
you are young enough that 1.5 years wont be that big a deal with TTC.

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

I would take the opportunity. 2 years is a snap... you can always wait to have children, this opportunity might not come around again.

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

for me personally... there's no reason good enough to put off my plans of TTC. if the time is now... then the time is now. to me, nothing is worth the missed opportunity of TTC and then possibly missing the window for it. That would be a lifelong regret for me.

but that's me.

you might be totally different. only you can decide this. what does DH think? I think you guys should really talk about it and lay out the pro's and con's for each side and then see what outweighs.

Wow this is a tough decision. Congrats! From one attorney to another I understand that this is definitely a great opportunity!

Question - Can you get family leave during the clerkship after a year since its federal job? This may be an option? Also, that is awesome that your firm is holding your position I know due to the economy many firms are not.

Good luck on your decision. By the way is the clership 2nd Circuit? Or would you have to move?

Also, I am 33 and we will be TTC soon. Its not old.

Congrats again and let us know what you decide.

I'm sure I could get leave but I would just feel terrible about doing that to the judge... i mean you're basically their right hand man.
Yes it's in this circuit so no move necessary. My commute would be a little longer, but i have a 10 min commute as it is lol.
I know it's not old... i hope no one thought i was implying that!!
and thanks

Good luck with your decision sorry it is such a hard one. 2nd circuit - nice . I would probably take the job but that is me, but I think it just depends whether you want to have kids now. What does your DH say?

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

I would do both! Take the position and TTC like janis said 'have fun with it' and don't go crazy watching the calender - you know! Just don't prevent it from happening!

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

I agree with everyone who says take the job and continue TTC too. I don't see why they should be exclusive. I definitely was applying to federal and state attorney positions with the complete knowledge that we were going to start TTC come January 2010 without a moment's hesitation on either end.

I don't see it being a big deal at all. The judge will have no trouble replacing you should you actually have to leave to take maternity leave before your commitment time is up. I've seen TONS of clerks who were massively pregnant in my experience, so it appears no one else seems to worry about the two issues conflicting, and neither should you.

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

i totally agree by leaving it up to fate/god/luck...lol

take the job and don't TTC, but don't try NOT to either....see what happens. If at the end of a year you're not preggo, then start TRYING....and that way you have that year under your belt when the doctor says they want to wait until you've tried for a year to find out about any problems or go forward with any help you may need.

what's meant to be is meant to be. take the job....you CAN have ur cake and eat it too! and 33 is sooooo young! I'm about to start TTC this month, and i'm 38!

good luck!

Re: Looking for some advice... long...

I think you'll probably working for a long time and other opportunities will surely come your way - your body has a limited shelf life for TTC. I would hate to be kicking myself in a few years for not trying earlier.

I agree with the other girls about doing both. You don't know if you'll get pregnant right away - might as well take the job and start TTC. Good luck!
