Meat thawing question

im involved in a discussion on lif about thawing your meat... they said that bacteria grows if you leave something to thaw in a warm room... they said you should put it in the fridge to thaw...

i've never once done that... neither has my father who made 99% of my meals as a kid...

i was just wondering if this was something that was like common knowledge... cause i feel like if it was i would have known lol

Re: Meat thawing question

i'll leave it on the counter if im defrosting it while i'll be in and out and house all day. but we usually put it in the fridge if we take it out the night before and then we're at work all day the next day.

Re: Meat thawing question

the bacteria thing is supposedly true. I try to take it out the night before and leave it on the counter for a few hours and then put it in the fridge. i would not leave it out all day. I feel like its still frozen sometimes in the fridge over night and thats annoying.... so i like to to the counter for a head start!

Re: Meat thawing question

If I'm gonna be home or in and out of the house I take it out and put it in the sink (clean, of course lol)...then once I feel like its mostly thawed I put it back in the fridge.

If I remember, I try to take it out the night before and then I put it in the fridge to thaw.

Re: Meat thawing question

It's true, you are SUPPOSED to put it in the fridge to thaw. But I never think of doing it early enough to thaw it in the fridge so I leave it in a warm room, run it under hot water (while it's still packaged) or nuke it!

I'm still alive so it must be okay! You're cooking it anyway, right??

Mmm that's true, I'm not a red-meat eater so I'm pretty much just thinking chicken. But I cook red meat for DH and I still leave it on the counter.

Re: Meat thawing question

Thawing on the counter can allow rapid bacteria growth. Here are the USDA recommendations:

Re: Meat thawing question

DH thaws in the fridge in a bowl of water.

I don't thaw because I don't cook and therefore don't know the first thing about anything.

Re: Meat thawing question

I looked this up recently and it said the best way to thaw meat is to do it slowly. The websites I looked at said this includes putting it in the fridge or putting it in a pot of cold water (and replacing the cold water every now and then).

Re: Meat thawing question

I leave it on the counter... we haven't died yet.

I just think it takes too long in the fridge.

Re: Meat thawing question

I thaw in a bowl of cold water inside the fridge. My mom teaches about nutrition and food safety so I would get yelled at if I thawed my meat on the counter. It goes against everything she teaches her workshop participants.
