Re: More Food Spending Questions

Yea. Ur totally right. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be rude. But to my defense, the op asked ways to cut down on her $800month food bill. Suggesting she goes shopping at a place intended to help out families isn't exactly the greatest thing either. Sorry if I came off rude

Re: More Food Spending Questions

Costco might help you too. I have no clue what we spend on food per month because we eat dinner out/order in about 3-4 times a week but we do buy food in bulk--like we have a gigantic bags of frozen chicken cutlets and frozen cooked shrimp we use for meals when we do cook.

We use a program called Angel Food Ministries, there are several places around LI for it, where you get food for 4 for a week (lasts us longer) for about 30-40, depending on what you order.

You can get 5pounds of meat for 25 (rib-eye and sirloin), or a mix of types of food, including vegetables, eggs, meat, milk, etc, for $31. It helps keep our cost of food down.

isnt that for people who are poor?

Its for anyone. There is no requirement for income. Anyone can purchase them.

DH and I aren't poor, we still use it to help manage costs

But if it helps out families, she is a family with her and DH. its not that there's a limit to how many they offer, and the church we get it from in the Dix Hills region encourages everyone to be part of it, as in this economy, every little bit helps. It has portioned controlled individually frozen chicken and steak, and when steak can be 6.99-9.99 a pound, 5 pounds of it for 25 isnt such a bad deal

Re: More Food Spending Questions

We used to eat out EVERY night and between that and buying lunch every day at work were spending $1200/month on food. It was ridiculous.

Cooking at home is the best way to reduce your food bill... or if there is a restaurant you LOVE order it to go. You'll have drinks at home, prevents you from considering dessert and you save on the tip (I always tip the to-go people less than if we sat down and ate) which all together will probably save you at least $30. There is a Thai place we love so we order from there once a week, it comes to $20 but if we eat there we end up spending more than twice that! We just take it home and catch up on our DVR... it's like a little tradition.

Two things I love that are cheap to make and there is always left overs....

Soup. I'll make a pot of chicken/beef soup and it's seriously good for 3 days and costs about $20 to make.

Lasagna or Baked Ziti. Itialian food is SO SO cheap to make. Pasta costs NOTHING and you don't have to even make your own sauce if you don't want to. The most expensive part is the cheese but still for about $15 you'll have dinner for at least 2 nights. And even if you buy a package of sausages or whatever to cook with it... maybe another $4-5.

Re: More Food Spending Questions

Definitely agree with the pasta advice!
We try not to eat out during the week unless its a special occasion and we take leftovers to work.
