Need some work advice

So little background. At my current job when I was hired, I entered Department A, about a year later a better position opened up in Dept B. They offered me the job, but it was just a lateral move, but a much better opportunity so I took it. I'm very happy with the work I do in Dept B. My supervisor has given me much more advanced work and I definitely do the most in my department. I recently got my review which was outstanding. For the past year, I've been pushing for a promotion but they just keep telling me 'yes you deserve it but its a lot of red tape, it will come soon promise yada yada'

Now when I moved from A to B they hired someone to replace me.

Well yesterday that new person got promoted!!! He has been at the company for about 18 months. I've been here 3 and half years and never got promoted.

Would you say something?

Re: Need some work advice

It depends on a lot of factors, like relatioship with bosses, etc. If it were me, I would say something.

Re: Need some work advice

That would TOTALLY tick me off but I don't know if I would say something. Did that person get a promotion you would have wanted? Then I might say something. If that person got a promotion that fit them but still a level down from you, I wouldn't say anything because that just means that position was available. I think it really depends on the circumstances on the promotion and also, make sure he's not buddy buddy with anyone or related to someone, then that's a whole new ballgame!

Re: Need some work advice

workplace politics can be really tricky. however, i would say you are well positioned to inquire about what needs to happen for you to receive a promotion.

your boss/company is giving you all of the signals that you are in line for a promotion from verbal assurances to documented performance reviews.

i think the key is to focus on YOUR career path as opposed to reacting to your co-workers promotion.

My vote is to push your career as opposed to sitting quiet. I've changed A LOT as a professional in my 8 years working since college. In the past I would have totally sat there and continued to work hard without taking action but at this point in my career - no way.

Its hard to give advice without really understanding the dynamics/politics of your company/office.
