NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Have you figured out how you're going to do holidays? Will you go to DH's family for some and your for others? Will you be hosting some?

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Right now our house is too small for our familes, so we'll be splitting them like we've always done.

My DH likes my mom's cooking better than his families, so most of the time we end up at my parents house!!!

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Everyone lives closeby so we go to both. I can't wait until we have a place big enough to invite people over to our house.

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

We live in the apartment under ILs so we have most holidays . We see my family on X mas and some other times throughout the year... my mom and step father like to go away on the holidays. And we always do Thanksgiving with ILs because its Dhs favorite holiday and it sometimes lands on his birthday.

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

The holidays are not quite fully worked out yet, but will look something like this:

Sunday before Thanksgiving - MIL's
Thanksgiving Day - My parents house
Christmas Eve - My grandma's house
Christmas Day - FIL's

Since DH's parents are divorced we have to alternate the holidays each year, so someone may get left out and have to be seen on another day or something... (Last year, my parents did not get Xmas eve or Xmas day, so they got first pick this year).

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Ok, so we were actually pretty easy for the holidays. My mom is Jewish but my dad is Catholic so we still celebrate EVERY holiday. This has been the breakdown and so far, so good.

New Years Day - ILs for the winter classic
All Jewish Holidays - my parents (DUH)
Palm Sunday - ILs
Easter - my parents
Mother's Day - breakfast with ILs, dinner with mine
Father's Day - breakfast with my parents, dinner with ILs
Thanksgiving - used to be my cousin but I'm PRETTY sure we're not invited anymore (their still p*ssed about our engagement party - whole other story) but it will prob be my parents and then ILs - I go black friday shopping with DH's aunt every year
Christmas Eve - ILs
Christmas Day - my parents
New Years Eve - dinner with his parents and then either party at his sisters or a party at our union hall (the party at the union goes every other year and we live around the block)

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

I'd love to start hosting holidays by us once we get a house, but since we're still in our tiny apartment probably for the next year, we'll split holidays like we've been doing the last few years

Thanksgiving we usually have at my parents and we go to IL's for dessert

Xmas eve is spent with inlaws and xmas day is divided between both houses

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

MIL ALWAAAAAAAAAAYS wants to spend the holidays with the family. Like she asks MONTHS ahead of time. Meanwhile, my parents wait til the last minute. It's not that they don't care, they're just not so crazy about it if we're not there to celebrate.

SOOOOOO anyways, for thanksgiving, MIL already mentioned dinner in the city to us months ago and my family obviously hasn't made any plans yet. so it looks like we'll be spending it with his family.

i'm sure she'll be asking us to spend christmas with them too.

and don't get me wrong, i love my in laws, but i just look at it as it's not that serious. no need to ask months ahead. i guess i got that from my family

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Our co-op is way to small to host but hopefully one day we will have a nice big house to fit everyone!

We split up our holidays, one year we go to my side for easter and DH's side for thanksgiving - the following year we do the opposite. Christmas Eve we go to my mom's house and Christmas Day we go to my dad's house and then to DH's side (my parents are divorced)

we go to his mom's and one day when we have the money we will go to Alaska for Christmas with my family. But for now it's just staying local and it's only his mom. His dad lives in Florida so that is also out!

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

We are lucky in that our families do holidays so differently it's pretty easy. Thanksgiving is the only holiday we have to split. Easter his family doesn't really do anything. Christmas Eve we go to my brothers, then go to his house around 9 pm. They open presents at midnight party until like 3 AM and sleep all day on xmas. We wake up early, go to my sisters and watch my nieces open their christmas gifts. THen we all go to my mom's and spend the day their with my cousins, aunts and uncles.

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Christmas Eve - We go to my Uncle's in laws and then my Mom's cousins for a big party.

Christmas Day - We host.

New Year's Eve - We go out for a big dinner with my extended family, and then we have a party at our house.

New Year's Day - We'll probably go to my parents house or maybe out to eat.

Thanksgiving is kind of up in the air right now... I think that we are going to host, and if people have other plans then that is fine. I prefer to host holidays. This is the first time in just around 5 years that my family is going to be together for Thanksgiving, and I want to be with them.

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

we'll continue to split the holidays. we just have our kitchen table - and while we have a rather large apt., we have no dining room furniture - so no where for people to eat.

we'll continue to split the holidays - we usually figure out where we will be at which house as the time draws closer.

we did thanksgiving at my parents house last year so its probably IL's this year.

New Years eve is generally with his family and New Years Day is with mine

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

We can't host any holiday as we live in a small condo.. So we always go to our families...

Thanksgiving: Usually spent with my family at a big gathering at my fathers house...(while I come from divorced parents - my mom, dad and stepmom all celebrate the holidays together).
Sometimes we go to his Sister's for dessert.

Christmas Eve - *this is our big one...as both of our families celebrate Christmas on xmas eve...AND DH is usually working*
So usually I'm at my SIL's in the Noon time area to celebrate with my family....DH will join when he gets out of work for an hour or two...and then we go to his sister's house for the rest of the night.
This year - DH will be working the entire day cause it's a Saturday ... (but at least he took off last year for our 'first' christmas as a married couple!)

Christmas Day - Depends on who's doing what...we float between my brother, his brother or his sister or my Mom.

New Year's Eve - DH works... I try to meet him at his restaurant at Midnight for my kiss..

New Year's Day - Sleepy time... we stay home, relax, have a lazy day.

Re: NWQOTD 9/28 - Holidays

Well his parents live upstate near Syracuse, so there is no way to do joint holidays for us. Usually we go to Christmas at my parents, Easter at his parents and we do a Thanksgiving with friends here. But this year I think we will go to my house for thanksgiving and christmas since my dad is supposed to have surgery right around turkey day!
