I have been to Esca (mario batali's restaurant) and its good but you have to like fish. I know of some good ones in queens too if you want outside of the city.

some in queens would be great too. it's for a gift card for one of my faculty members and it's a surprise. i just started working for him and i don't know what he likes so i decided to play it safe and go italian. i don't know if he eats fish or meat so if you have any in queens (he lives in Jamaica) that have a lot of variety on their menu please PLEASE let me know!!! thank you sooo much!!!

Piccolo is great, Parkside is also very good, Trattoria L'Incontro and ponticello are all very good.

Coppola's. They have 2 locations. The one on 3rd Ave and 27th St. is where Dh and I got engaged. It is our favorite restaurant, and they have the best Chicken Parm in the city.

NO WAY - i live above them and they make my floor hot when the oven's on too much. . so one more plate means I get overheated!
they do have good food though!
I'll add more ideas to the list later though i have a bunch or recs
do you have a specific neighborhood in mind?
