Operation: Convince my dad that going vegetarian for health reasons is proving to be...

...more successful than I thought!

A couple weeks ago, my dad was rushed to the ER with excruciating chest pains. My mother had basically stopped a heart attack from happening by giving him a pill that will open his arteries (it's a prescription that he has to carry everywhere with him due to heart issues) and a couple of baby aspirins to thin his blood. The clot broke up, thank god.

My dad had already had a trip planned to stay with DH and I this week. He's been here since Monday. I've made it a point to cook really yummy, low-fat vegetarian food while he's here and he's been really surprised at the 'manly/non-hippie-weirdo food' that is vegetarian!

Yes, he got pizza with sausage while we were out yesterday...but c'mon, this IS NYC and FL pizza blows donkey balls.

And last night he said to DH and I 'you know, I really think I could go vegetarian with my meals at least a few days a week' He's basically had to cut out red meat, and sticks mostly to lean poultry and fish nowadays. (Nowadays meaning in the past couple of years since his heart problems started).

And...biggest shocker of all...he has started to become aware of where his food comes from. He's been researching factory farming, and where to get eggs that were raised by chickens who weren't stuck in cages for their whole lives.

W T F! It's really a cool thing to watch him transition into this new lifestyle...even though he MADE FUN OF ME FOR IT for the past 18 years.

this is great for your dad. sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. i'm glad you've shown him that it can still be tasty.

but... i have to admit.

every once in awhile i love my steak all kind of delish and half bloody.

ughhhh with a big pile of mashed potatoes covered in butter.

Re: Operation: Convince my dad that going vegetarian for health reasons is proving to be...

thats great! Please convince and tell you dad to really try to avoid red meat...I believe past age 40/50 not sure which one it was, that red meat increases the chances for heart problems AND colon cancer in men.
He can try new recipes like grilled chicken, fishes, seafood, etc... and lots of veggies and water....
Plus since he is a heart patient, dont know what to doctor said in regards to excerise, but walking is great, the weather is getting better so maybe hell be motivated to do things outdoors...

good luck!
