Please Share your Catholic Readings
I am still having a hard time with this. I am definitely going with Corinthians (Love is patient), but I am stumped on the rest. I am trying to avoid 'wifes be subservient to your husbands, husbands be kind to your silly wives' kind of nonsense. Can you sort of edit a passage? For instance there is a passage from Tobit that I like, but the whole 'I am not marrying my sister for any lustful reason' is kind of creepy

Re: Please Share your Catholic Readings
We went through the same thing for the first reading - we didn't want any subservient wives thing either. So we got rid of the old testament reading all together. Here's our first reading:
The Key to Love
The key to love is understanding, the ability to comprehend not only the spoken word, but those unspoken gestures, the little things that say so much by themselves.
The key to love is forgiveness, to accept each others faults and pardon mistakes, without forgetting, but with remembering what you learn from them.
The key to love is sharing, facing your good fortunes as well as the bad, together; both conquering problems, forever searching for ways to intensify your happiness.
The key to love is giving, without thought of return,
but with the hope of just a simple smile, and by giving in but never giving up.
The key to love is respect, realizing that you are two separate people, with different ideas; that you don't belong to each other, that you belong with each other.
The key to love is inside us all. It takes time and patience to unlock all the ingredients that will take you to its threshold. It is the continual learning process that demands a lot of work, but the rewards are more than worth the effort, and that is the key to love.
Our Second Reading
1 John 4:7-12
My dear people, let us love one another since love comes from God and everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.
Anyone who fails to love can never have known God, because God is love.
God’s love for us was revealed when God sent into the world his only Son so that we could have life through him; this is the love I mean: not our love for God, but God’s love for us when he sent his Son to be the sacrifice that takes our sins away.
My dear people, since God has loved us so much, we too should love one another.
No one has ever seen God; but as long as we love one another God will live in us and his love will be complete in us.
Our Gospel Reading
Matthew 22:35-40
To disconcert him, one of them put a question, Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?
Jesus said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.”

We used the Genesis reading for the 1st reading. I'm with you on none of that 'a good wife knows here place' bible stuff. I don;t remember the chapter and verse but we used the Genesis one about woman being made from man and becoming one..i think it ended with 'and that is why a man leaves his family to become one with his wife.:

Re: Please Share your Catholic Readings
Thankfully, our priest allowed us to use the Hand Blessing and the song 'The Prayer' in place of any biblical readings :D

Did you get the 'Together For Life' book? You can get it at your church. It lists all the reading choices and it's very helpful in planning your mass.

Re: Please Share your Catholic Readings
It wasn't easy to find readings I liked. Here's what we came up with:Old Testament:
Song of Solomon 2:10-14, 8:6-7
Love is Strong as Death
My lover spoke and said to me, 'Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me. See. The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.'
My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding places on the mountainside, show me your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.
Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.
New Testament Reading:
Ephesians 4: 26-27
Colossians 3: 12-15
Live in Love and Thanksgiving
In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds [your names here] together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Gospel:
John 15: 9-12
Remain in my Love
Jesus said to his disciples:
As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my Love.
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love.
I have told you this
So that my own joy may be in you
and your joy may be complete
This is my commandment:
Love one another
As I have loved you
The gospel of the lord.

Becky, I used Love is Patient... (etc.) as well, and another about a man leaving his family and becoming one with his wife. I can't remember what is was called though. I just like the idea of it.

Thank you all
I have been struggling with this for a while and whenever I try to ask Keith's opinion he gets that blank look in his eyes that tells me he has mentally checked out and temporarily gone to a better place
