question about puppies and breeders

to preface, i never had a dog. we had cats growing up and those were cats around the neighborhood that were babies and begging for meals....

so i wonder...why do people go to breeders? how much does it usually cost? dont the animal shelters have puppies?

not sounding judgemental AT ALL (so please dont take it that way)...i just really am curious....

thanks

We went to a breeder because there was a certain type of breed that we wanted due to disposition and just overall cuteness. Going to a breeder allows you certain traits to be passed down that only pure bred's can have (this is also good and bad).

We also debated going to a shelter to rescue a puppy but we only wanted to get one dog for now. Puppies/dogs in shelters you run the risk of the dog's personality being completely altered from a previous owner's treatment.

Re: question about puppies and breeders

We went to a breeder because we wanted a pure breed Poodle. Jerry is allergic and we couldnt take a chance with a rescue dog that may or not be a hypo allergenic dog. We also know the temperment of his parents so we kinda know that he wont be agressive.

We paid $1500.00 for Shamrock. I did feel it was a little high but his mother is a Champion and father show quality.

Re: question about puppies and breeders

With a shelter dog you never know what you are geting. Like Lauren pointed out, you don't know the dog's temperment due to previous owners. Also, they might not know the exact breed of the dog- different dog breeds have different temperments. Some are good with kids and some just arent. This can be a major factor for many families in choosing a dog.

The reason we are choosing to go to a breeder is because DH and I both have allergies to certain types of dogs. I would hate to get a dog from a shelter only to find out I was allergic and have to give it back. The dog we're getting is good with allergies.

Just want to add that even if you go to a breeder you run the risk of the the dog's personality being not so great as well. My parents have a pure-breed cavalier king charles spaniel and he is so inbreed, he definitely has some issues.

I think people go to breeders for a certain type of dog and a lot of people have allegies so they can only get certain types of dogs.

For me, we rescued both our animals and I'm so happy. Our one dog I had saved from a kill shelter in New Orleans. I can't bear the thought of people killing innocent animals so anyway I can help I try. Most shelters in the South, dogs come in on Tuesdays and if they are not adopted by Friday, they just kill all of them. Sorry I don't want to upset anyone, but its reality. We also foster dogs now until they get adopted and volunteer with rescue organizations....so this is something I'm very passionate about.

You go to breeders or shelters because pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills

Thats why we went to a breeder because of Jerrys allergies. If it was totally me I would go to a shelter and get a dog from there. (I have no dog allergies) I really agree with you about the thought of killing innocent animals but we just couldnt take the chance.

Puppy Mills don't care for their dogs properly. They don't check them for medical problems that could potentially be passed down to their offspring. There's also a lot of inbreeding in puppy mills all for the sake of keeping the breed pure but it results in a lot of issues for the puppies born down the road.

Personally, and please Colleen and Celia don't be offended, I can't imagine any reason why anyone would BUY a dog. There are tons of purebred rescues and while you never know what you're going to get with a shelter dog, you might just get the best dog ever. I love my two mutts with all my heart and wouldn't trade them in for a purebred dog for anything in the world.

Re: question about puppies and breeders

And FYI - their are PLENTY of breeders out there that I would consider running a puppy mill. Like I mentioned, my parents went to supposedly top of the line breeder, paid thousands and their dog has serious mental problems. Some breeders just get their female dog pregnant over and over for a few years and then just dump it. Its horrible.

So do your research if its necessary to go to a breeder. Or look into rescue organizations. I volunteer for Labs4Rescue and we get people who abandon pure-breed labs all the time. So its possible to get a pure breed dog without paying top dollar.

ITA... and I mean NO offence to anyone who needs to go to a breeder.....it is just not my choice. I'm lucky though as I don't have to worry about allergies.

I got all 4 of my animals from shelters and they are all amazing, well tempered, fun, loving babies.

Regardless of how they are aquired - anyone willing to love an animal is a special person.

This is so great!! I have a friend who does this as well, and although she gets attached to some of the dogs at times, she knows that they'll find homes for the dogs and they get great care in the meantime. Fantastic!
