Question for the teachers out there
This is probably going to sound ridiculous but what exactly do you need to be say a first or second grade teacher, degree wise?I have my bachelors in Visual Communications but lately I've been toying with the idea of going back to school and something is pulling me towards teaching.
TIA!

Re: Question for the teachers out there
You need your degree in elementary education. You would have to enroll in education classes and then take the tests for your certification, do student teaching, etc.

Yeah pretty much. Plus there are like no teaching jobs right now so I dont think it would be wise to change to the education field right now. I graduated 2 years ago and have been subbing ever since

Ughh, this is one of those 'I wish I knew then what I know now' moments. I wish I had more guidance when choosing majors.
And I'm sorry it's been so tough for you to find a permenant position!

Re: Question for the teachers out there
You could do it as a masters program...my sister did that at Queens College - it might take a little longer than two years since you may have other prerequisites you would need to get out of the way. Although there may not be too many teachers being hired right now, I have a feeling that in a few years there is going to be a big demand for new teachers. There are a LOT of old teacher still teaching because they want their last year to be their biggest year financially because of our pension, and I think they're all waiting until we get a good raise to do it!

i do too!! i always wanted to be a teacher, then going to college i decided to major in marketing cuz i thought business majors is where the money is! maybe it is if you really care about buisness and/or marketing, but i dont and now im a paralegal making shitt money! the thought of more student loans to go back to school and then to graduate and not be able to find a job really makes me not do it. so i continue to be misreable until we hit the lotto!

ITA. You'll need some sort of master's degree as a teacher anyway, so you'd be killing two birds w/ one stone if you do the Master's degree route.

Thanks so much for this suggestion ladies. Do you happen to know if I can do this at any college or is Queens College the only one who offers it?

agree...also if you are interested in the areas, science and math teachers are always needed...these areas are usually male dominated so they like to see women applying for them to make it more mixed...just a thought

I did this through CW Post. Had my BA in Psychology and went there for my Masters in Childhood Education.
