real estate brokers?

i am a lawyer and i am interested in getting involved in real estate. i was told that i can apply to become a real estate broker quite easily as an attorney.

does anyone know more information about this? do i have to then affiliate myself with a real estate company? is this something i'd have to do full time? im lookign really for a nights/weekends opportunity.

any and all information would be helpful.

thank you ladies!

Re: real estate brokers?

My SIL (not an attorney), did this part time for a while. I don't know what the requirements are to become a RE broker for an attorney, but you can do it part time (nights and weekends are probably when most people would want to look at houses, but if you have to attend closings - I don't think it always necessary for the broker to be there - that would be during normal working hours). I also know that my SIL had to be affiliated with a RE office to keep her license. Good luck!

Re: real estate brokers?

I don't think it's difficult for anyone to become a real estate agent. My uncle worked for LIPA and took the tests to become a real estate agent as a source of additional income. He did affiliate himself with a real estate company that was local to where he lived.

From what I can tell, you get out of it what you put into it. The real estate agent we used to buy our home has made herself available 24/7, texts, calls, emails, tons of expertise, etc. She is very well established and I think her success is due to the amount of time she invests into her work.

My uncle, on the other hand, has helped a few friends and referrals from friends purchase homes. Because he was not as active in building his business and pursuing opportunities, networking events, etc, he has not been too successful in that area.

I would try googling New York State licensing requirements to find out what exams you have to take to become licensed, and then assess how you would balance your real estate career with your law career. Here's a link I found on the DOS website:http://www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/re_broker/re_broker.html

Good luck!!
