Rewarded for Honesty?

I placed an order with a baking company last week and the day after I got my package, I got another package. I took it home and when I opened it, I realized that they mislabeled a different person's order.

DH said I should keep a couple of things in the order and then send the rest back. I thought about it, but then I heard my Father's voice in my head saying, 'Come on Becca, you know that's dishonest.' So I had an attack of morality and decided to send everything back.

I just called the company and told them about their mistake. The woman wasn't at all grateful that I was so honest about it. I COULD HAVE KEPT EVERYTHING AND SAID SCREW IT, THEY'D NEVER KNOW.

She was just business as usual and said she'd send a call tag through UPS and I'd give them the box tomorrow or Friday.

This got me thinking, should we be rewarded for honesty? I'm SURE big companies make mistakes like this all the time and suffer a loss when people don't call and let them know what happened. Shouldn't they have offered me a coupon or something??

Maybe honestly shouldn't be rewarded on a personal and daily basis, but when it comes to money and product, I think there should be some kind of compensation...

Thoughts?

Re: Rewarded for Honesty?

I love that you were honest. I ordered DH a kindle for his bday and amazon sent me 2 of them. I kind of bugged out and then I called them to tell them. I was scared karma would come back and bite me in the asss if I didnt. The woman on the phone was flat out SHOCKED that I called and told them they sent me 2. They gave me a $30 credit as a thank you for being honest.

So yes, I think you should have been rewarded.

Re: Rewarded for Honesty?

good for you for returning it

i don't think they need to reward you (though obviously, it'd be nice). you're supposed to be honest because you're a good person, not because you want something in return.

this is how i feel about it.

you saved them a lot of money hypothetically. do the right thing company. you had to take time out of your day to call and let them know about this, also be there to hand off the package to the guy or whatever... pack it back up. etc.

Re: Rewarded for Honesty?

it would definitely be good for their business if they DID reward honesty ... and if i had my own business, i'd prob give *something* .... but i just don't feel it's a must, i guess.

Re: Rewarded for Honesty?

There are simple things that a business can do to help their company out. When a mistake is made and a consumer returns product that was not theirs a small consideration would be nice although not mandatory. Something as simple as a discount off the next order or a small credit to them can go a long long way. Some businesses don't see those as opportunities though and their business will not profit as much as they can.

Would be nice if honestu would be rewarded!!!!

Re: Rewarded for Honesty?

A slightly similar thing happened to me: I got sent someone else's registry item from Macy's. I went to the store to return it and the guy was like 'do you want the refund in a macys gift card?'

I told him this wasn't my gift and that it should go to the people whose registry it came from, and he was totally confused. I guess he expected me to take the money and run. Plus the sheets were really ugly so there was no way I'd keep them.

I think you did the right thing, and the good karma will come back around to you, even if it wasn't from this exact company.

<-- cheesy!

Re: Rewarded for Honesty?

Good for you for sending it back!

I think it's an extra 'bonus' if you are rewarded for your honesty... definately a nice touch and good customer service - but I don't think it's a must.

I do, however think the lady should have at least said Thank you. No call for being rude or business as usual when soemone does something nice.

Yeah, I agree. It would just be good customer service and it definitely would have helped if she thanked me at the very LEAST. I think that's what annoyed me the most.
