So...when do I begin this name change thing?

I'm trying to delay it as much as possible but I can see it's just going to make things more difficult having two names in the meantime.

When did you start the process, how long does it take, and what is the first step?

Can you point me to a website or something maybe?

I am starting next week. I am first going to the Social Security office, then DMV. My birthday was last week and people wrote me checks to my new last name and the bank was questioning it. So I had to take my marriage certificate with me, so yes two last names is going to continue to be a pain.

I've already started. I went to Social Security on Monday. Most of my credit cards and utilities I did on the phone. I just need to go to DMV and to my bank and I'm about done.

I know what you mean about holding off. I still don't feel like Cynthia Hislastname. I feel like that's someone else. And it's sad to say 'good bye' to my maiden name. But it's also exciting too.

PS- As soon as your marriage license comes in you can do SS, DMV and the bank.

I pretty much did it all today, a little over 1 month later.
For me it was easy but I don't live in NY.
Job was easy, they didn't ask for any proof.
One credit card did it over the phone other I had to send proof.
Social Security just wanted license and marriage license, same with DMV (in CO though).
Banks just wanted marriage license.
I think that's all I did today but thats most of it.
Just have to find out about the deed to the house and passport.

When you go to DMV they will take a new picture. And don't forget to bring the title for your car because they will need to change the registration too!

I have had a lot of trouble with this, because I first have to change my last name with the immigration department and it costs me $200! so, I'm waiting in that, everything is still under my maiden name

My bank told me that my acount has to match my ID, so it is in my maiden name. Not sure what will happen when we try & deposit checks Saturday.
The tricky part is my mariage liscens has my name hyphneated, but none of my checks do.

I have no idea how to do SS. I assume it involves waiting on a long line somewhere.

we did our bank accounts as soon as we recieved our marriend cert. soon after i started on my social security card and my driver's license. i also did my passport.. it's been mailed out and got a confirmation letter from the passport agency upon recieving my package. it's been 2mths and i have yet to recieve my new passport. it's not a good sign. i'm afraid someone might have stolen it or something. damn.

SS was really easy. Just go early. I only had to wait for one person (and then the time grew behind me...)

But I am dreading the DMV. I hate going there.

I've never realized what a pain in the @%#$ this was going to be. I have so many bank accts and insurance policies to change including my professional licenses. And to thinkI waited a month to start all this.
