Wedding cake on your anniversary
We are approaching our one year anniversary, and yesterday I picked up the cake from my mother's freezer (she took it home for us after the wedding). I looked at it, and noticed it wasnt wrapped so well (just some plastic wrap and tin foil, but not tightly sealed or anything). Do you guys think eating it would be unsafe? How well do these things need to be wrapped and frozen to be safe to eat?

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
we had wrapped ours really well, but when we opened it and tried it... it was all mush so we passed on eating the cake! instead, we had the same cake after dinner at the same place we were married at the year earlier....

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
I would not risk it...but im sort of a stickler about eating question food. So much so that I didnt even save my cake b/c the idea of eating one year old cake didnt really appeal to me. Ive heard that people who had it tightly wrapped and frozen all year long have defrosted it and told me it tastes great - so maybe i was wrong and it made me think i should have saved it. But since the blackout (which would have surely ruined it since it was out for more than 12 hours) - i was glad i didnt bother keeping it.Ok, off on a tangent there - sorry.

Cut it 12 pieces of our cake
DH could not wait because we really didn't eat much on our wedding day despite of all the hard work involved in planning it for 18 months (1 1/2 years). In addition, DH thought our anniversary cake would go bad no matter how much plastic and/or silver foil wrap you put on in a box inside your freezer to prevent from spoilage and frezzer burn. I wanted to save the entire cake for our one year anniversary. Thus, DH and I compromised. We decided to cut it 12 pieces for 12 months of the year where each month on the day we would have a piece of our cake. We save the biggest piece for our one year anniversary and sadly with the Blackout of 2003 in NYC of no having electricity restored in our area until 8:14 am Friday, August 15, 2003 morning made our cake somewhat harden. The taste was definitely not the same from the power outage that began at 4:05 pm on Thursday, August 14, 2003 here in NYC. Anyway a week later we celebrated our 1 year anniversary at our wedding reception venue and came home to our beloved cake. Sadly, the taste was not the same. I'm glad we cut it 12 pieces and each month we have a piece because the blackout would spoil the entire cake!

Re: Cut it 12 pieces of our cake
You are all so lucky considering Larkfield Manor threw mine out. I was so upset, they said they would get me another one, but that's not my wedding cake. Jerks

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
Ours was wrapped very well and it tasted great. Why not just put it out for you and him and taste a little bit of it and see how it is.

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
Happy Almost Anniversary Octobergirl! IF I remember correctly, October 20th is the date. I miss all the excitement we had last year at this time! My cake doesn't look great but I do plan to at least try it November 10th. Hope you are doing well!!! Are you going to the Oak Room for your Anniversary?

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
We had a destination wedding so transporting the top of the cake was pretty much impossible. We've opted to buy a mini version of our cake for our 1st anniversary.
Ask if your bakery can do the same.

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
We ate our cake during the days after our wedding ... we did not feel like freezing it ... our freezer is very small.

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
We had ours at our one month anniversary. I knew I would never eat year old cake.I am from the school of when in doubt throw it out so I would ask the baker to make a mini-version of your wedding cake (with atleast the same flavors) and have that on your anniversary.

Our reception cake made a small replica of our wedding cake for free! The outside is not exactly the same but the filling on the inside definitely is!

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
Novembergirl--HI!!! Can you belive its almost a year for us!?!?I may try to get to the Oak Room, but most likely not on the actual day--we'll be away for our anniversary weekend.
How are you doing?
Thanks to all who responded to my question--I'll probably taste it and then throw it out!

Re: Wedding cake on your anniversary
My Dh was horrified to find out of this tradition!
The thought made him sick - but then I told him we'd defrost it, have one or two bites and toss the rest. It's more symbolism for us than actually eating the entire cake
So that made him feel better. I just brought mine back from my mom's freezer and it smells/looks great! I'll let you know how it tastes on Sunday
